ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays have recalled catcher Curt Casali and right-hander Ryan Garton, and they selected the contract of right-hander Eddie Gamboa, all from Triple-A Durham.
Thursday marks the day when active Major League rosters can expand from 25 to as many as 40 players through the conclusion of the season.
Casali, 27, was with Tampa Bay from Opening Day, and he batted .168 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs until he was optioned to Durham on Aug. 5. He leads the Rays with 56 starts at catcher this season, and he has caught 10 of 32 attempted basestealers (31.2 percent, up from 24 percent in 2015).
When Gamboa, 31, plays his first game, he will be the second-oldest player to make his Major League debut for Tampa Bay, behind 35-year-old left-hander Jim Morris in 1999. Gamboa spent two days on Baltimore's active roster in April 2015, but he did not appear in a game.
The Rays signed Gamboa as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 19, and he went 6-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 27 games (12 starts) this season for Durham.
Garton, 26, begins his fourth stint with Tampa Bay this season. In his three previous stints, he is 1-0 with one save and a 4.73 ERA in 23 appearances. Garton was 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 22 relief appearences for Durham.
