Inbox: Who will go when injured players return?
Beat reporter Juan Toribio fields fans' questions
TAMPA BAY -- Questions regarding the 25-man roster, the Trade Deadline and more are answered in this week's Inbox.
Who are you anticipating getting sent down when Yandy Díaz, Brandon Lowe, Blake Snell and Anthony Banda get activated? Tyler Glasnow, too, if there’s still any chance of that happening this year.

There’s still a ways away before the Rays have to worry about some of these guys, but the infield logjam is going to be one to watch whenever Diaz, Lowe and even Joey Wendle return to health. With the acquisitions of Jesús Aguilar and Eric Sogard, the Rays are going to have some tough decisions to make until the rosters expand in September.
Michael Brosseau could be an option to get sent down once Lowe returns, but the rookie has played well in his opportunities. He’ll definitely be a factor for the team in September. Designating Ji-Man Choi for assignment could also be an option to clear room on the roster, but that seems doubtful of happening with just 29 days remaining before the rosters expand. Either way, the Rays will have some interesting decisions to make, but they’ll also have a potent roster of position players once all healthy.
As for the pitching, that always remains fluid and it’s important to see just how much Snell and Glasnow can help the team in whatever role they come back in. Banda will probably remain in Triple-A for most of the season and add some depth late in September. Neither of the three pitchers are expected to return until September, so it won’t be necessary to send anybody down once they return.
How close were the Rays to acquiring Zack Wheeler, and what was the package?

The Rays were indeed in on trying to acquire Wheeler from the Mets, but talks never fully got serious because of the Mets’ desire of trying to acquire one of the Rays’ top prospects, according to sources. By trading for Marcus Stroman, the Mets, who still believe they can make a run at the postseason, made it clear that they were going to have to be blown away by an offer in order to move Wheeler.
Are we going to just keep going with a closer-by-committee approach?
-- @kylexcited via Twitter
Yes. Even with the acquisition of Nick Anderson, the Rays still plan on going with the best matchup at any point of the game. Anderson, Emilio Pagán, Diego Castillo, Colin Poche and Chaz Roe are all going to get looks whenever manager Kevin Cash believes the game can be won against the middle of the opposing team’s lineup. The Rays have nine players with a save this season, and I would be surprised if it stays at just nine.
Do you expect the Rays to use any specific guy as their primary opener now that Ryne Stanek is gone?
-- @Markdoob26 via Twitter
This is going to be another thing the Rays just play game by game based on the matchup. With Stanek now with the Marlins, the Rays will allow pitchers like Ryan Yarbrough and Jalen Beeks to get some outright starts, but it’ll all depend on the matchup. As far as openers, Andrew Kittredge and Castillo will likely be the two options the team leans on whenever needed moving forward.
Do you think the Rays got everything they wanted from the Trade Deadline?
-- @MLBRaysUp via Twitter
Yes. The Rays set out to acquire a right-handed-hitting power bat and they did that with Aguilar. They also wanted to solidify the bullpen, and they were comfortable with adding Anderson and eventually adding Trevor Richards and Peter Fairbanks to that mix. The decision to move Stanek was a surprise, but that says just how much the front office believes Anderson can improve the bullpen. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if the moves were enough to get the Rays (63-48) into the postseason.
