KANSAS CITY -- The Rays activated right-hander Matt Andriese (stress reaction, right hip) from the 60-day disabled list on Monday and optioned right-hander Chih-Wei Hu to Triple-A Durham.
In addition, the Rays designated Triple-A infielder Taylor Featherston for assignment.
Andriese, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday, had been scheduled to make a rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Monday night, instead he pitched the final three innings of the Rays' 12-0 win over the Royals to earn a save. He is expected to be slotted back into the rotation.
"Where we're at with our bullpen, the workload they've had the past couple of games here, we probably felt it was our best interest to get Andriese up here," manager Kevin Cash said.
Andriese was placed on the DL on June 13, retroactive to June 11. His last appearance was the second game of the June 10 doubleheader against the A's. He lasted only one inning in that start before leaving due to injury.
"It's been a while, so I'm definitely excited to get back on the field and help this team make the playoffs," Andriese said. "... I'm good to go."
Andriese is 5-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 12 starts this season.
Worth noting
Durham right-hander Brent Honeywell, who was the first pitcher to earn SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game MVP honors, was suspended four games for an unspecified disciplinary problem. He is expected to return to the team after serving his suspension.
The Rays did not offer comment. President of baseball operations Matt Silverman noted via a text, "No comment ... just an internal matter."
