ARLINGTON -- The Rangers signed veteran outfielder Travis Snider to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, the club announced on Friday.
Snider, a left-handed hitter, is an eight-year Major League veteran with the Blue Jays, Pirates and Orioles, who did not play in the big leagues last season. He spent 2016 at Triple-A Omaha in the Royals' organization, where he hit .245 with three home runs, 29 RBIs and a .350 slugging percentage in 84 games.
The Blue Jays selected Snider in the first round in 2006. The 28-year-old has recorded more than 300 at-bats just once in a season in the Major Leagues. It came in '14 as a member of the Pirates, when he batted .264 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs and a .438 slugging percentage in 322 at-bats.
Over a 162-game season, Snider would average .244 with 26 doubles, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs, a .311 on-base percentage and a .399 slugging percentage.
Snider has primarily been a corner outfielder, with 226 games started in left and 201 in right.
