Long homer caps Jung's big night

July 16th, 2021

equaled career highs with three hits and four RBIs, but it's the one that left the yard that left people talking.

MLB's No. 47 prospect took out his frustrations of a homerless July by slugging a 446-foot blast while helping drive Double-A Frisco's offense to a 9-3 win over visiting Springfield on Thursday night.

Jung's fifth home run was his first since June 29, a span of 11 games and 39 at-bats.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring with a two-run single during Frisco's four-run uprising in the opening frame and added a second knock in the seventh for his third hit. However, it was his second at-bat in the second inning that produced the biggest reaction of the night.

With a runner aboard, Jung pounced on a 2-0 offering and deposited it over the berm in left-center field for his fifth home run for the RoughRiders and his seventh of the season. The San Antonio native was denied a chance at a fourth hit when he was plunked leading off the eighth.

Jung's second multihit performance in three games and his third three-hit effort of the year lifted his slash line to .297/.373/.495 in 91 at-bats. The eighth overall pick in 2019 has already eclipsed his career high in home runs and has notched eight extra-base hits and 21 RBIs in 23 games since making his season debut on June 15.

Jung missed the first six weeks of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot during Spring Training. Prior to the injury, the 6-foot-2, 214-pound third baseman had been 2-for-7 with two RBIs in 10 Cactus League games. There was a thought Jung might open the year with Triple-A Round Rock, but the injury and subsequent surgery put the aggressive promotion on the backburner.

The offensive firepower helped make a winner of Hans Crouse, who tossed five no-hit innings. The No. 7 Rangers prospect walked three and hit a batter but equaled his season high with seven strikeouts. Crouse was lifted after hitting the first man he faced in the sixth, who later came around to score.
