Stand Up to Cancer Night especially meaningful to Rangers skipper

August 29th, 2022

The Texas Rangers and Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation hosted Stand Up To Cancer Night on Saturday to spotlight cancer awareness and support those affected by the illness.

In collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer and American Airlines, the Rangers, Detroit Tigers, and fans throughout Globe Life Field paused after the final out in the fourth inning to participate in a special moment of support.

Throughout the ballpark, everyone rose to their feet and held placards in the air to recognize family, friends, and community members diagnosed with the illness, as well as the doctors and nurses who treat these patients every day.

The night was even more impactful for Rangers players and staff as interim manager Tony Beasley joined the team on-field as a colorectal cancer survivor.

Beasley, who was diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer before the Rangers’ 2016 season, has been vocal about his battle with cancer and announced his release from future scans and checkups on May 20, 2022, his sixth year cancer free.

During the moment of recognition, players and staff who have known Beasley throughout his fight once again showed their support for the skipper by taking a stand in his honor.

In addition to the moment of honor, the Rangers incorporated impactful Stand Up To Cancer elements into Saturday’s pre-game ceremonies.

Texas Rangers and American Airlines employees who battled cancer were recognized during pre-game ceremonies, and twelve-year-old Annabelle Grace Bartel, currently in remission from a rare childhood cancer known as Osteosarcoma, tossed the ceremonial first pitch.

Annabelle Grace, affectionately known as AG, was diagnosed in 2019 after suffering severe pain in her shoulder and arm, impacting her ability to do many of the activities she loved, including playing softball. Catching AG’s first pitch behind home was none other than Tony Beasley, who imparted some words of encouragement to the young fighter.

As part of the day’s event, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation also donated all proceeds from the Texas 2 Split 50/50 Raffle to Stand Up To Cancer. A total donation of $22,000 went to the organization to support its innovative research to discover new life-saving cancer therapies.

American Airlines will continue its annual fundraising campaign to benefit Stand Up To Cancer through September 30. To learn more about how to contribute to Stand Up To Cancer, visit su2c/aa.com.
