Texas adds OF Chester, RHP Anderson
The Rangers completed their December deal with the Rays on Tuesday by acquiring Minor League outfielder Carl Chester as the player to be named later. Chester isn’t on the 40-man roster, and he will be assigned to the team’s Double-A roster.
On Dec. 10, the Rangers acquired first basemen Nate Lowe and Jake Guenther, along with a player to be named later, in exchange for infielder Osleivis Basabe, catcher/outfielder Heriberto Hernandez and outfielder Alexander Ovalles.
Chester, 25, has spent his entire career in the Tampa Bay system since being selected by the Rays in 12th round of the 2017 Draft from the University of Miami. He last played in 2019, when he hit a combined .257 with six home runs and 46 RBIs in 119 games with Class A Advanced Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery. In three Minor League seasons, Chester slashed .284/.340/.397 in 306 games.
Rangers sign Anderson
The Rangers also signed right-handed pitcher Drew Anderson to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League camp on Tuesday. The 26-year-old made one appearance for the White Sox last season on Aug. 8, his lone MLB stint. He was designated for assignment the next day and released a month later.
Anderson has appeared in 10 games (one start) in the Major Leagues in the past four years with the Phillies (2017-19) and White Sox ('20). He pitched in the Australian Baseball League this offseason, striking out 10 batters in five scoreless innings.
