Josh H. Smith on, Duran off Rangers' Wild Card roster
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rangers announced their roster for the American League Wild Card Series against the Rays ahead of Game 1 on Tuesday.
Utilityman Ezequiel Duran was left off the roster, while the club decided to carry three catchers in Jonah Heim, Mitch Garver and Austin Hedges. The 24-year-old is hitting .190 in his last 15 games, but his playing time has deteriorated since Corey Seager’s return to the infield from injury and Evan Carter’s call-up in the outfield.
On the pitching side, Jonathan Hernández being left off was the biggest surprise after he pitched well down the stretch, with a 2.89 ERA over his last seven outings. The Rangers announced that the right-hander is down with a right lat strain, an injury that manager Bruce Bochy said was sustained during Game 162, when Hernández tossed one perfect inning with two strikeouts in Texas’ 1-0 loss to Seattle.
Bochy added that Hernández isn’t likely to be available for the potential Division Series.
Rookie Grant Anderson, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since Aug. 25, replaces Hernández in the bullpen.
