ANAHEIM -- The Angels extended a qualifying offer to closer Raisel Iglesias ahead of the deadline on Sunday, the club announced. The qualifying offer is for $18.4 million for one year, and players have 10 days to accept or reject the offer.

Iglesias, 31, is coming off a career year that saw him record 34 saves and post a 2.57 ERA with 103 strikeouts and 12 walks in 70 innings. He has been one of the best closers in baseball over the past five seasons, racking up 134 saves with a 2.86 ERA and 395 strikeouts in 308 innings.

Iglesias could accept the one-year contract but is expected to command a multiyear deal in free agency, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him reject it. Even if he does reject it, he could re-sign with the Angels on a different deal. If he signs with another club, the Angels will receive Draft pick compensation. The Angels would receive a pick after Competitive Balance Round B if Iglesias rejects the offer and signs elsewhere.

The Angels, though, have made bringing back Iglesias one of their top priorities this offseason, as they don’t have any internal options at closer. He proved he can handle multiple innings -- he pitched more than one inning 16 times in 2021 -- but the Angels played it safe with him down the stretch, limiting him to no more than three outs per appearance in September with the club out of the race.

If Iglesias signs elsewhere, the Angels will have to get creative with their bullpen. They might look to trade for a veteran closer, like last offseason, when they acquired Iglesias from the Reds. Other veteran closers on the free-agent market this offseason include Kenley Jansen, Mark Melancon and Ian Kennedy. Craig Kimbrel is reportedly available via trade after he had his $16 million contract option picked up by the White Sox.
