NEW YORK -- has tormented Yankees ace Gerrit Cole with the home run over the years. But in Saturday's 14-4 loss to New York at Yankee Stadium, Boston’s star slugger came up with a milestone single off New York’s ace.

In the top of the third, Devers ripped the 1,000th hit of his career into right field, scoring speedster David Hamilton from second base and tying the game at 1-1.

While Devers became the 33rd player to reach 1,000 hits for the Red Sox, the 27-year-old became just the sixth to do it before turning 28.

It is an impressive list that Devers joins, including his mentor Xander Bogaerts (now with the Padres) and four Hall of Famers in Bobby Doerr, Jim Rice, Tris Speaker and Carl Yastrzemski.

With Hamilton on second and two outs, it seemed like there was a chance Cole would either walk Devers intentionally or pitch around him. Instead, Cole came after Devers with a 1-0 cutter on the inner portion of the strike zone. Devers scorched it at an exit velocity of 106.4 mph.

The hit by Devers sparked a three-run rally for the Red Sox.

In the fifth inning, Devers hit a solo blast a Statcast-projected 441 feet off Cole, knocking the Yankees' ace out of the game. It was Devers' eighth career homer off Cole in 39 at-bats. No one else has hit more than four homers off the defending American League Cy Young Award winner.
