Prospects, vets Gee, Wang among KC camp invites
KANSAS CITY -- Prospects Hunter Dozier, Jonathan Dziedezic, Sam Selman and Brooks Pounders are just a few of the 17 non-roster players whom the Royals have invited to Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz., next month.
Also invited were veteran right-handers Dillon Gee and Chien-Ming Wang, left-handers David Huff and John Lannan, and infielder Cody Decker.
Dozier, a third baseman, was the team's first-round pick and eighth overall in 2013 and is the team's 12th-best prospect. Selman, a left-hander and the team's 26th top prospect, was a second-round pick in 2012, and Dziedzic, another left-hander, was a 13th-round pick in 2013. Pounders was a second-round pick of the Pirates in 2009 and acquired in a trade in '11.
Right-hander Christian Binford, the team's 21st top prospect, also is invited.
The rest of the list of invitees: catcher Zane Evans (fourth round, 2013), Cam Gallagher (second round, 2011) and Parker Morin (14th round, 2012), infielders Whit Merrifield (ninth round, 2010) Orlando Calixte (undrafted free agent) and Dusty Coleman (Minor League free agent), and right-hander Aroni Nina (undrafted free agent).
Pitchers and catchers will report to Surprise on Feb. 18. Workouts for pitchers begin the following day. The remainder of the squad will report on Feb. 22 and begin workouts the next day.
