Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Added left-handed pitcher James Paxton and catcher Danny Jansen to the active Major League roster. Paxton will wear number 65. Jansen will wear number 28.
  • Claimed right-handed pitcher Yohan Ramírez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Designated right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson and catcher Reese McGuire for assignment.

Boston’s 40-Man Roster is now at 39.

Paxton, 35, was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, in exchange for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar. The left-hander is 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA (44 ER/89.1 IP) over 18 starts with the Dodgers this season. Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, the Vancouver native is 72-40 with a 3.76 ERA (393 ER/940.0 IP) and 996 strikeouts in 174 career outings (all starts) with the Mariners (2013-18, ’21), New York Yankees (2019-20), Red Sox (2023), and Dodgers (2024).

Jansen, 29, was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday, in exchange for three minor leaguers. The right-handed hitter has played in 470 Major League games, all with the Blue Jays (2018-24). Selected by Toronto in the 16th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the Illinois native has batted .222 (314-for-1,413) with 71 home runs and a .733 OPS in his career, making 383 starts at catcher and 18 as the designated hitter. In 61 games this season, Jansen has hit .212 (42-for-198) with 13 doubles, six home runs, and a .672 OPS.

Ramírez, 29, owns a 5.98 ERA (29 ER/43.2 IP) in 37 games this season with the New York Mets (five games), Baltimore Orioles (five games), and Los Angeles Dodgers (27 games). The right-hander was traded from the Mets to the Orioles on April 11, claimed off waivers by the Mets on May 6, and traded to the Dodgers on May 20. Originally signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in July 2016, the Dominican Republic native owns a 4.51 ERA (84 ER/167.2 IP) in 139 career games with the Seattle Mariners (2020-22), Cleveland Guardians (2022), Pittsburgh Pirates (2022-23), Chicago White Sox (2023), Mets (2024), Orioles (2024), and Dodgers (2024).

Anderson, 36, has pitched in 27 games (one start) for Boston this season, recording a 4.85 ERA (28 ER/52.0 IP) with three saves. Originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native owns a 4.37 ERA (535 ER/1,101.0 IP) in 245 career games (201 starts) with the Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers (2016-19), Toronto Blue Jays (2020), Philadelphia Phillies (2021), Cincinnati Reds (2022), Tampa Bay Rays (2023), Colorado Rockies (2023), and Red Sox (2024).

McGuire, 29, has played in 52 games with Boston this season, making 40 starts as the catcher and batting .209 (29-for-139) with three doubles, three home runs, and 18 RBI. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the Washington native has batted .252 (237-for-942) in 354 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), Chicago White Sox (2022), and Red Sox (2022-24).
