Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Selected right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 80.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart to Worcester following last night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
  • Designated infielder/outfielder Bobby Dalbec for assignment.

Fitts, 24, has pitched in 24 games (23 starts) for Worcester this season, recording a 4.17 ERA (54 ER/116.2 IP) with 111 strikeouts. In six starts since the beginning of August, the right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA (9 ER/34.0 IP) and 0.88 WHIP, most recently tossing 6.0 scoreless innings at Rochester on Monday. Acquired from the New York Yankees on December 5, 2023, the Alabama native was originally selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. He owns a 3.75 ERA (159 ER/381.1 IP) in 73 career minor league games (72 starts).

Shugart, 27, pitched 1.1 innings last night against the White Sox. The right-hander has appeared in three games for Boston this season, his Major League debut, recording a 6.00 ERA (4 ER/6.0 IP). Selected by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native also owns a 4.55 ERA (33 ER/65.1 IP) in 32 games (five starts) for Worcester this season.

Dalbec, 29, has played in 37 Major League games this season, making 14 starts at first base, seven at third base, two in right field, and one as the designated hitter while batting .133 (11-for-83). The right-handed hitter has also played in 85 games for Worcester this season, batting .255 (82-for-321) with an .833 OPS, 19 home runs, and 64 RBI. Selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the Washington native has hit .222 (210-for-946) with 47 home runs and 142 RBI in 331 career Major League games, all with Boston (2020-24).
