Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Reinstated first baseman Triston Casas from the 60-Day Injured List.
  • Reinstated right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell from the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart to Triple-A Worcester.
  • Designated first baseman/designated hitter Dominic Smith for assignment.

Boston’s 40-Man Roster is now at 40.

Casas, 24, was placed on the Injured List on April 21 with a left rib strain. The left-handed hitter played in 11 rehab games with Worcester, making seven starts at first base and four as the designated hitter while batting .300 (12-for-40) with seven doubles, one home run, seven RBI, six walks, and a .954 OPS. He has played in 22 games this season with the Red Sox, batting .244 (19-for-78) with an .857 OPS and six home runs. Originally selected by the Red Sox in the first round (26th overall) of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Florida native has batted .252 (147-for-583) with an .844 OPS, 35 home runs, and 87 RBI in 181 career games with Boston (2022-24).

Criswell, 28, was placed on the COVID-19 Related Injured List on August 9, retroactive to August 8. He is 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA (32 ER/71.2 IP) in 18 games (13 starts) for Boston this season. The right-hander also owns a 1.40 ERA (4 ER/25.2 IP) in five starts with Worcester. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 13th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Georgia native owns a 4.69 ERA (57 ER/109.1 IP) in 30 career Major League games (15 starts) with the Angels (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23), and Red Sox (2024).

Shugart, 27, made his Major League debut in last night’s game against Baltimore, recording two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. The right-hander has also pitched in 29 games (five starts) with Worcester this season, going 4-2 with one save, a 4.98 ERA (33 ER/59.2 IP), and 71 strikeouts. Originally selected by Boston in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has posted a 4.77 ERA (197 ER/371.1 IP) in 155 career minor league games (50 starts).

Smith, 29, has played in 83 games this season with the Red Sox, batting .237 (59-for-249) with 20 doubles, six home runs, 34 RBI, and 25 walks while making 65 starts at first base and four as the designated hitter. Originally selected by the New York Mets in the first round (11th overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has hit .247 (499-for-2,020) with 119 doubles, 64 home runs, and 259 RBI in 683 career games with the Mets (2017-22), Washington Nationals (2023), and Red Sox (2024).
