December 24th, 2024

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired left-handed pitcher Jovani Morán from the Minnesota Twins, in exchange for catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper.

Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 39.

Morán, 27, has pitched in 79 Major League games, all in relief for the Twins (2021-23). The left-hander has recorded a 4.15 ERA (42 ER/91.0 IP), .208 opponent batting average, and 1.33 WHIP, striking out 112 batters and walking 52 with only three home runs allowed. Selected by Minnesota in the seventh round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, Morán missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, he attended the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy and played for Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In 2023, he made his first career Opening Day roster with the Twins.

Gasper, 29, made his Major League debut in 2024, appearing in 13 games for the Red Sox. The switch-hitter also played in 92 minor league games between Double-A Portland (44 games) and Triple-A Worcester (48 games), batting .328 (102-for-311) with a .970 OPS. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the New Hampshire native was picked by Boston in the minor league phase of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
