Phillies Announce Roster Moves

The Phillies announced the following roster moves:

  • Outfielder Austin Hays was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 8/8) with a left hamstring strain
  • Outfielder Cal Stevenson had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley
  • Left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard was optioned to Lehigh Valley
  • Right-handed pitcher Max Lazar had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley
  • First baseman Darick Hall was designated for assignment
  • Right-handed pitcher Max Castillo was designated for assignment

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcements.

Hays, 29, has slashed .263/.282/.395 in 10 games (39 plate appearances) with the Phillies this season. Acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on July 26, Hays has 19 extra-base-hits with 18 RBI, nine walks and two stolen bases in 73 games with both clubs.

He was originally selected by Baltimore in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

The 27-year-old Stevenson has slashed .307/.420/.488 (.908 OPS) with 21 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 39 RBI, 27 stolen bases and 62 runs scored in 91 games with the IronPigs this season. The left-handed hitter ranks fourth in the International League in batting average and on-base percentage, tied for sixth in OPS and tied for seventh in stolen bases. Stevenson, who set a Lehigh Valley franchise record with five stolen bases on July 2 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was named IL Player of the Month for July after slashing .373/.505/.600 (1.105 OPS) in 21 games. The Fremont, Calif., native has appeared in 29 major league games in his career between the Oakland Athletics (2022) and San Francisco Giants (2023).

He was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2018 MLB Draft and was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from San Francisco on May 26, 2023.

Allard, 26, went 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA (5 ER, 13.0 IP) and eight strikeouts to two walks in three games (2 starts) for the Phillies after being recalled from Lehigh Valley on July 27. Last night in Arizona, the San Clemente, Calif., native earned his first major league win since Oct. 4, 2022, after allowing one earned run with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round (14th overall) of the 2015 MLB Draft, Allard signed with the Phillies as a free agent on Jan. 23, 2024.

The 25-year-old Lazar has made 34 relief appearances for double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley this season, posting a 1.79 ERA (8 ER, 40.1 IP) with 53 strikeouts, nine walks and a 0.84 WHIP (25 hits). The 6-foot-2 right hander has also converted 13 of his 15 save opportunities and was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June after not allowing any earned runs in 11 appearances (12.1 IP) and posting a 0.49 WHIP. Lazar will wear No. 60.

Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Lazar was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Dec. 8, 2023.

Hall, 29, appeared in 80 games for Lehigh Valley this season, slashing .248/.324/.402 (.726 OPS) with 12 home runs and 56 RBI. He played in 60 games with the Phillies from 2022-23 and was selected by Philadelphia in the 14th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

The 25-year-old Castillo appeared in 14 games for Reading and Lehigh Valley this year and had a 7.62 ERA (44 ER, 52.0 IP). Originally signed by Toronto on Sept. 25, 2015, Castillo was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the Boston Red Sox on Feb. 7, 2024.
