Matt Arnold Named MLB Executive of the Year
Arnold Becomes First Brewers Executive to Earn the Award
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Brewers Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold has been named 2024 MLB Executive of the Year. The award, which was introduced in 2018, is voted on by executives from all 30 clubs prior to the start of the postseason. Arnold is the first Brewers executive to earn the honor.
Arnold constructed a roster that went 93-69 in 2024, finishing in first place in the National League Central division for the second consecutive season, 10.0 games ahead of the Cardinals and Cubs. The Brewers tied the Padres for the fourth-best record in baseball, trailing only the Dodgers (98-64), Phillies (95-67) and Yankees (94-68), and qualified for the postseason for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, including division titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023-24.
Some of the key transactions in the last year that contributed to the successful 2024 season included:
November 15: Named Pat Murphy manager, who became a leading candidate for National League Manager of the Year.
November 17: Signed LHP Jared Koenig to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League camp. Koenig became one of the team’s most reliable arms out of the bullpen and as an opener, posting a 2.47 ERA in 55 games/6 starts.
December 4: Signed OF Jackson Chourio to an eight-year contract through 2031 with club options for 2032 and 2033, an industry-record commitment for a player without any Major League experience. Chourio went on to become the youngest player in MLB history to produce a 20 HR/20 SB season.
January 3: Acquired LHP Bryan Hudson in a trade with Los Angeles-NL. Hudson ranked among National League relief leaders in ERA (2nd, 1.73), opponent batting average (2nd, .135) and WHIP (2nd, 0.72).
January 26: Signed 1B Rhys Hoskins as a free agent. Hoskins posted his fifth season of 25+ HR and third season of 80+ RBI.
February 1: Acquired INF Joey Ortiz as part of the trade that sent RHP Corbin Burnes to Baltimore. Ortiz started 129 games this season, including 124 at third base, and was named National League Rookie of the Month for May.
July 3: Acquired RHP Aaron Civale in a trade with Tampa Bay. Civale went 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 14 starts with the Brewers.
July 30: Acquired RHP Frankie Montas in a trade with Cincinnati. The Brewers went 8-3 in his 11 starts with the team.
Arnold, 45, completed his ninth season with the Brewers in 2024. He was named the 10th general manager in franchise history on November 19, 2020 and was promoted to his current role on October 27, 2022.
