Dodgers select River Ryan

LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers selected the contract of right-handed pitcher River Ryan and designated left-handed pitcher James Paxton for assignment.

Ryan, 25, will make his Major League debut this evening against the Giants. He made eight appearances between the Arizona Complex League, Rancho Cucamonga and Oklahoma City, posting a 2.22 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. His last five starts were with Oklahoma, posting a 2.76 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. He has spent three seasons in the minor leagues, going 3-11 with a 3.22 ERA in 49 games (45 starts). He was originally acquired from the San Diego Padres in exchange for infielder Matt Beaty.

Paxton, 35, pitched yesterday, recording his eighth win of the season in 5.0 innings of work. He was 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts this season. The 11-year veteran has pitched for Seattle (2013-18, 2021), New York (2019-20), Boston (2023) and Los Angeles (2024) and he is 72-40 with a 3.76 ERA in 174 career starts. He has 996 career strikeouts in 940 innings. He was signed by the Dodgers on January 29.
