September 4th, 2024

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter and right-handed pitcher Jack Neely from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Jorge López on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 3) with a right groin strain and left-handed pitcher Justin Steele on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 1) with left elbow tendinitis.

Wingenter, 30, has made two major league appearances this season (27.00, 7 ER/2.1 IP), both with the Boston Red Sox. Since being claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on August 2, he has pitched in eight games for Iowa and posted a 2.79 ERA (3 ER/9.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts, compared to just three walks, contributing to a 0.83 WHIP.

The six-foot seven-inch Huntsville, Ala., native is 2-3 with one save and a 5.84 ERA (58 ER/89.1 IP) in 92 major league games across parts of four seasons with the San Diego Padres (2018-19), Detroit Tigers (2023) and Boston Red Sox (2024). He was drafted by the Padres in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB Draft and made his major league debut August 7, 2018, vs. Milwaukee.

Neely, 24, has appeared in four games in relief for the Cubs this season, including his major league debut Aug. 21 vs. Detroit. Acquired from the Yankees July 30 for right-handed pitcher Mark Leiter Jr., Neely has pitched in 38 minor league games for Double-A Somerset, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Triple-A Iowa, going 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA (16 ER/49.1 IP) and nine saves. He has struck out 77 batters in 49.1 minor league innings, good for a 37.2% strikeout rate.

Across parts of four minor league seasons, the San Antonio, Texas, native is 11-7 with a 2.79 ERA (52 ER/168.0 IP), 23 saves and 269 strikeouts in 120 games, all in relief. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the 11th round of the 2021 draft out of The Ohio State University.

López, 31, has pitched in 22 games for the Cubs since signing with the club as a minor league free agent in June, going 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA (6 ER/24.2 IP) and two saves.

Steele, 29, is 5-5 with a 3.09 ERA (44 ER/128.0 IP) in 22 starts for the Cubs this season.
