CUBS ACQUIRE RHP CODY POTEET FROM NEW YORK YANKEES
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet from the New York Yankees for outfielder Cody Bellinger. The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.
Poteet, 30, is 5-4 with a 3.80 ERA (35 ER/83.0 IP) in 24 career major league games (13 starts) with Miami (2021-22) and the Yankees (2024). The right-handed pitcher made his major league debut May 12, 2021, in Arizona, earning the win (5.0 IP, 2 ER). He went on to post a 1.06 ERA (2 ER/17.0 IP) in his first three major league starts, including a 14.0-inning scoreless streak from May 18-28. In 2022, Poteet made his first career Opening Day roster and did not allow a run in eight of his first 12 appearances, including a career-high 19.1-inning scoreless streak from April 16-May 17.
The six-foot one-inch Poteet in 2024 went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA (6 ER/24.1 IP) in five games (four starts) across three stints with the Yankees. He allowed three runs or fewer in each of his four starts and was the fifth Yankees starter since 2010 to record at least three wins his first four starts with the club. He spent the remainder of the campaign with Double-A Somerset (three starts) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (10 starts), going a combined 3-0 with a 3.40 ERA (20 ER/53.0 IP).
A San Diego native, Poteet was selected by Miami in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of UCLA, where he combined to go 14-12 with a 3.92 ERA (97 ER/222.2 IP) in 73 games (39 starts) across three years.
Bellinger, 29, in two seasons with Chicago, batted .286 (290-for-1,015) with 52 doubles, four triples, 44 home runs, 175 RBI and an .815 OPS. All told, in parts of eight major league seasons with the Dodgers (2017-22) and Cubs (2023-24), he owns a .259 average (942-for-3,642) with 186 doubles, 23 triples, 196 home runs and 597 RBI in 1,005 games.
