Colt Keith of the Detroit Tigers Named the American League Rookie of the Month for July; Tyler Fitzgerald of the San Francisco Giants Named the National League Rookie of the Month for July

Second baseman Colt Keith of the Detroit Tigers has been voted the American League Rookie of the Month for July and shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald of the San Francisco Giants has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for July. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Keith became the sixth Detroit rookie (seventh time overall) to win a monthly award and the first since Eric Haase in July 2021. Other Tigers to claim Rookie of the Month honors include Justin Verlander (May 2006), Rick Porcello (May 2009), Austin Jackson (April 2010) and Brennan Boesch (May and June 2010). Fitzgerald is just the fourth San Francisco rookie to win Rookie of the Month, joining Pedro Feliz (July 2001), Buster Posey (July 2010) and Luis Gonzalez (May 2022).

• The 22-year-old hit .322 (28-for-87) with seven home runs, one double, three triples, 17 RBI, 18 runs scored and one stolen base across 25 games in July while compiling a .404 on-base percentage and a .644 slugging percentage.
• During his award-winning month, the 2020 fifth-round Draft selection led AL rookies in hits, batting average, triples and slugging; tied for first in home runs; ranked second in runs scored and RBI; and tied for second in walks (12).
• Keith compiled a career-best eight-game hitting streak from July 3rd-10th, hitting .419 (13-for-31) with four home runs, two triples and eight RBI during the stretch.
• The Biloxi High School (MS) product posted his first career multi-homer game on July 5th at Cincinnati, going 2-for-5 with a pair of homers and three RBI to lead the Tigers to a 5-4 victory in the first game of a three-game series sweep. The performance also marked his third consecutive multi-hit contest.
• The second baseman connected on a game-tying two-run home run during a five-run ninth inning on July 13th against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers en route to a career-best four RBI, helping the Tigers to an 11-9, 10-inning victory.

• The 26-year-old hit .321 (17-for-53) with eight home runs, two doubles, one triple, 15 RBI, 13 runs scored and one stolen base in 16 games during July while registering a .390 on-base percentage and an .849 slugging percentage.
• Among NL rookies in July, Fitzgerald ranked first in homers, batting average and on-base percentage; second in RBI and slugging; tied for second in triples; fifth in runs scored; tied for fifth in walks (12); and tied for seventh in hits.
• The fourth-round selection in the 2019 MLB Draft compiled a 12-game hitting streak from July 6th-28th, batting .386 (17-for-44) with eight home runs, two doubles and 15 RBI during the run. The 12-game streak was the longest by a Giants rookie since Posey posted a 21-game hitting streak in July 2010.
• The University of Louisville product went deep in five consecutive games played from July 9th-23rd and drove home at least one run in nine of 11 games with a plate appearance from July 6th-27th.
• Fitzgerald became one of three players in Giants history with 11 home runs through his first 46 career games with a plate appearance, joining Hall of Famers Willie McCovey (1959) and Orlando Cepeda (1958). In addition, his eight home runs in a 10-game span from July 20th-27th marked the first time a San Francisco hitter accomplished that feat since Barry Bonds did so in April 2004.

Others receiving votes for AL Rookie of the Month included outfielder Colton Cowser (.315, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 2 2B, 13 R, 2 SB, .378 OBP, .507 SLG) of the Baltimore Orioles and starting pitcher Luis Gil (2-2, 3.33 ERA, 5 GS, 27.0 IP, 20 H, 8 BB, 33 SO) of the New York Yankees.

Others receiving votes for NL Rookie of the Month included Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes (2-1, 1.59 ERA, 4 GS, 28.1 IP, 13 H, 6 BB, 33 SO), who was the starting pitcher for the NL at the All-Star Game; outfielder Jackson Chourio (.317, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 7 2B, 14 R, 4 SB, .364 OBP, .512 SLG) of the Milwaukee Brewers; starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach (3-1, 2.08 ERA, 4 GS, 26.0 IP, 19 H, 1 BB, 28 SO) of the Atlanta Braves; and Fitzgerald’s teammate starting pitcher Hayden Birdsong (3-0, 2.45 ERA, 5 GS, 25.2 IP, 16 H, 12 BB, 33 SO) of the Giants.
