Blue Jays Acquire Clase & Sharp

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired OF Jonatan Clase and C Jacob Sharp from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Yimi García.

Clase has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Additionally, RHP Zach Pop has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and will be active for tonight’s game.

Clase, 22, has appeared in 19 games for the Mariners this season, spending the majority of the campaign with their Triple-A squad in Tacoma where he hit .274 across 59 contests with 11 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 34 RBI, and 26 stolen bases for an .856 OPS. The Santo Domingo, D.R., native was signed by the Mariners as an international free agent in 2018, making his MLB debut for the club earlier this season. The 5-10, 150 lb. switch-hitting outfielder has played 358 career games in the Mariners system, batting .264 with 73 doubles, 30 triples, 45 home runs, 173 RBI, and 191 stolen bases, earning a trip to the All-Star Futures Game in 2023.

Sharp, 22, has appeared in 44 games for Single-A Modesto this season, batting. 255 with 11 doubles, six home runs, 29 RBI, and a .774 OPS. The 5-7, 180 lb. right-handed hitter was selected by the Mariners in the 17th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Whittier, CA, native has made 55 career Minor League appearances, batting .238 with a .718 OPS.

García, 33, made 29 appearances for the Blue Jays in 2024, going 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA, 42 strikeouts, and a 0.80 WHIP. The Moca, Dominican Republic, native was signed by the Blue Jays as a free agent after the 2021 campaign, making 163 appearances for the club across three seasons, going 10-9 with a 3.44 ERA in 157.0 combined innings. The 6-1, 225 lb. right-handed reliever has also suited up for the Dodgers, Marlins, and Astros in his big league career, making a total of 404 appearances, posting a 3.54 ERA with 424 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP.
