Athletics agree to terms with INF Gio Urshela on one-year contract

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics agreed to terms with infielder Gio Urshela on a one-year contract for the 2025 season, the club announced today.

Urshela began the 2024 season at Detroit and was hitting .243 with five home runs and 37 RBI in 92 games when he was released in mid-August. He signed with Atlanta and batted .265 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 36 games with the Braves. The 33-year-old right-handed hitter combined for a .250 batting average in 128 games overall, making 102 starts at third base and 15 at first base. Urshela also went 0-for-6 in two postseason games for Atlanta, his fifth season with postseason experience.

Urshela is a .273 career hitter with 73 home runs, 332 RBI and a .729 OPS in 792 games over nine seasons in the majors with Cleveland (2015, 17), Toronto (2018), New York-AL (2019-21), Minnesota (2022), Los Angeles-AL (2023), Detroit (2024) and Atlanta (2024). He batted .299 in 62 games with the Angels in 2023 before a fractured pelvis ended his season in mid-June. The native of Colombia had his best season with the Yankees in 2019 when he hit .314 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 132 games. Urshela led Major League third basemen with a .992 fielding percentage in 2020 and has made 614 of his 700 career starts at third base.
