Astros announce Minor League Players of the Month

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros player development department has named RHP Ryan Gusto the Astros upper-level Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July and IF Brice Matthews the Astros upper-level Minor League Player of the Month for July. The Astros also named RHP Anderson Brito the Astros lower-level Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July and IF Chase Jaworsky the Astros lower-level Minor League Player of the Month for July.

Gusto, 25, went 3-1 with a 1.15 ERA (4ER/31.1IP) in five starts in July for Triple A Sugar Land. Gusto also recorded 29 strikeouts, a 0.80 WHIP and a .168 opponent batting average during July. For the season, Gusto has recorded a 4.18 ERA (44ER/94.2IP) with 92 strikeouts, a 1.39 WHIP and a .260 opponent batting average. In the Pacific Coast League, Gusto ranks second in ERA, third in opponent batting average, third in WHIP, fifth in strikeouts and sixth in innings pitched. The 25-year-old was drafted by the Astros in the 11th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Florida Southwestern State Junior College.

Matthews, 22, batted .246 (15x61) with 11 runs, four doubles, four home runs, six RBI, eight walks, five stolen bases and a .869 OPS in 16 games in July with Double A Corpus Christi. This season Matthews is batting .286 (55x192) with 38 runs, 11 doubles, 11 home runs, 28 RBI, 32 walks, 21 stolen bases and a .913 OPS. The 22-year-old was selected by the Astros in the first round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft from the University of Nebraska. Matthews is rated as the Astros number three overall prospect by MLB.com.

Brito, 20, went 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA (3ER/20.2IP) in five appearances in July between the Dominican Summer League, Florida Summer League and Low A Fayetteville. He also recorded 37 strikeouts and a .123 opponent batting average in July. This season Brito has recorded a 1.05 ERA (4ER/34.1IP) with 57 strikeouts, a 0.70 WHIP and a .118 opponent batting average in 10 appearances, including six starts. The 20-year-old was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 1, 2023, from Estado Sucre, Venezuela. Brito is rated as the Astros number nine overall prospect by MLB.com.

Jaworsky, 20, batted .260 (19x73) with 12 runs, five doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, six stolen bases and a .707 OPS in 21 games with Low Fayetteville. For the season, Jaworsky is batting .233 (66x283) with 45 runs, 20 doubles, four home runs, 32 RBI, 28 stolen bases and a .681 OPS in 78 games with Low A Fayetteville. The 20-year-old was drafted by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Jaworsky is rated as the Astros number 27 overall prospect by MLB.com.
