A’s reinstate RHP Miller, recall INF Alvarez, place OF Brown on paternity list

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated right-handed pitcher Mason Miller from the 15-day injured list, recalled infielder Armando Alvarez from Triple-A Las Vegas, placed outfielder/first baseman Seth Brown on the paternity list, and designated right-handed pitcher Gerardo Reyes for assignment, the club announced today.

Miller was placed on the IL retroactive to July 23 with a broken left hand and is 1-1 with 15 saves, a 2.21 ERA and .463 opponents OPS in 34 relief appearances. His 15 saves are the most in the majors this year and third most in Oakland history by a rookie. The 25-year-old right-hander has held the opposition to a .146 batting average and has struck out 70 batters in 40.2 innings. Miller is tied for sixth in the majors among relievers in strikeouts and his 306 pitches of 100 miles per hour or more are the most among all pitchers. The A’s lone All-Star, Miller was the winning pitcher for the American League as he struck out two in a scoreless fifth inning in the All-Star Game.

Alvarez returns to the A’s roster after being optioned on July 17. He made his Major League debut on June 22 and played in seven games, going 6-for-23 (.261) with one double, one RBI, two walks, and three strikeouts. In 61 games with the Aviators, he is hitting .313 with a 1.004 OPS, including 14 home runs, 34 walks, and just 46 strikeouts in 251 plate appearances.

Brown started the year with the A’s before spending 16 games with Las Vegas. Since returning to the A’s on July 11, he is hitting .283 with five home runs and a .895 OPS in 20 games. Overall this season he is hitting .212 with 10 home runs and a .641 OPS in 99 games with the A’s.

Reyes spent the majority of the season in Las Vegas before joining the A’s on July 30. He appeared in three games for the A’s, allowing three runs, two earned, in 4.0 innings pitched with three walks and two strikeouts. In 31 games with the Aviators, he is 2-1 with a save and a 3.82 ERA in 33.0 innings pitched.
