In just over a month, approximately 200 of MLB's top prospects will head to the Arizona Fall League to continue their development and add to their innings totals for 2024.

While there are plenty of Minor League games – and eye-catching prospect moments – that will take place between now and the start of the AFL season (Oct. 4), it has us thinking ahead to which future stars we’ll see in the desert.

Each fall, all 30 Major League clubs tab seven top prospects to go to Major League Baseball's "finishing school." Those players are combined to form six teams that compete throughout October and November. Last season, several Top 100 prospects -- including Carson Williams (MLB No. 6), Jackson Jobe (MLB No. 8) and Colson Montgomery (MLB No. 28) -- headlined the talent-packed rosters.

On the latest MLB Pipeline Podcast, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo each identified one hitter and one pitcher who they would like to see in the AFL, and then they also played a rapid-fire game of “sí o no," in which they predicted whether each of MLB's top 30 prospects will go to the AFL -- not including players on Major League rosters.

Kumar Rocker, RHP, Rangers (No. 2)
“He's made four outings in Double-A, and he's been electric. He's touching 100 mph. The slider is a wipeout slider again. Four Double-A outings, 15 innings, six hits, one run, two walks, 21 strikeouts. He's healthy. He needs innings. I think it would be awesome to see Kumar Rocker in the Fall League.”

“We used to see first-round picks come to the Fall League and get experience. I think it was my first year at MLB.com where Kris Bryant was in the Fall League, and he was MVP straight out the Draft.

“I want all the first-round college position players, or a high number of them. ... All these guys are capable of performing in the Fall League. So, let's get them a taste of quality pitching, and get them 30-games worth of at-bats.”

Andrew Painter, RHP, Phillies (MLB No. 34)
“The last time we saw Andrew Painter pitch in a competitive baseball game was September of 2022, so it has been two years since he played. He had Tommy John surgery and it's not that it's taken that much longer to come back than usual. It's just the timing of it.

“The thing that is amazing is as much time as he missed, he will only be 22 years old for all of the 2025 season, and getting some innings from the Fall League could be a nice springboard for his offseason. Even though he hasn't thrown a lot, I still think that there is the possibility that you see him in Philadelphia at some point in 2025.”

Marcelo Mayer, SS, Red Sox (MLB No. 5)
“The fact of the matter is, as quickly as he has moved, and he's now with Worcester, he has not played a ton of baseball, 78 games total last year, 77 games this year. Injuries have been an issue.

“He has had a very good year this year in Portland, but just because of the missed time, I would love to see him get some more at-bats and some more reps. Next year could be a big year for him where he starts really knocking on the door to get to Boston, and because he's missed so much time, he's the kind of elite-level prospect I would love to see make up for some of those lost at-bats in Arizona.”
