Bucs swat out first pitch of back-to-back games

September 2nd, 2019

DENVER -- With their 6-2 victory over the Rockies on Sunday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep at Coors Field, the Pirates made some history.

led off the game with a home run on the first pitch he saw from Colorado starter Jeff Hoffman. It was the first time in franchise history a Pirates leadoff batter had homered on the first pitch in consecutive games -- did the same Saturday night against Tim Melville.

But wait, there's more.

Those weren't the only leadoff homers of the series. On Thursday, Newman hit a homer on the second pitch he saw from Chi Chi Gonzalez. With three leadoff homers in four games, the Pirates became only the third team in Major League history to accomplish the feat

The last time it was done was from Aug. 13-15, by the Braves against the Marlins. Atlanta was also the last club to hit leadoff homers on the first pitch in back-to-back games, doing so in the same series when Ronald Acuna Jr. launched homers on the first pitch on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14.

To cap things off, Pittsburgh swept Colorado in a four-game series for the second time in franchise history. The first was from Sept. 21-24, 2015 at Coors Field.
