Jones' solid start sets stage for Cruz's walk-off in extras

PITTSBURGH -- ’ first start back after being skipped his last time through the rotation was a brief but effective one, giving five strong innings. Behind the contributions of and a walk-off single by , the Pirates came back to beat the Cardinals at PNC Park on Wednesday evening, 5-4 in 10 innings.

Jones started a bit wild, walking two of his first three batters faced, but quickly settled in to strike out five with just one earned run against him. Jones had his last start skipped to better manage his innings, but did throw a live batting practice this week.

Tellez carried the offense, starting with his baserunning in the fifth, making an aggressive turn to go first to third on a base hit to right, allowing Nick Gonzales to advance to second on the throw. Both runners would score on productive outs by Ke’Bryan Hayes and Joey Bart, and Tellez would tack on another with a seventh-inning solo shot to left.

The Cardinals would tie things up in the eighth on a two-run shot by Willson Contreras and take the lead in the 10th on an Alec Burleson sacrifice fly, but Bryan Reynolds tied things with a base hit in the 10th before Cruz roped a line drive to right to win it on the next pitch.
