Pirates name skippers at top two Minor League affiliates

January 31st, 2025

The Pirates announced their 2025 Minor League coaching assignments Friday, and there are two new skippers in charge of the top two affiliates.

Chris Truby -- who had been serving as the Pirates’ infield coordinator and was the bench coach in Indianapolis last season -- is taking over as Triple-A Indianapolis’ manager, and Andy Fox will be Double-A Altoona’s manager. Fox had spent the past three seasons as the Red Sox first-base coach.

It’s no surprise that there are changes for the top two Minor League managerial jobs in the system. Miguel Pérez is joining the Major League staff as the bullpen coach after serving as Indianapolis’ manager the past three seasons, and Robby Hammock (Altoona’s manager in 2024) left to join the Padres’ Major League coaching staff.

Indianapolis is retaining hitting coach Eric Munson and pitching coaches Drew Benes and Cibney Bello. Altoona’s top assistant coaches are newcomers to the city, but not the organization. Pitching coach Matt Ford previously served as Low-A Bradenton’s pitching coach -- and has drawn very positive reviews from many of the top young arms the Pirates have developed the past few years -- while hitting coaches Scott Seabol and Casey Harms are also moving up from coaching in A-ball last season. Harms was High-A Greensboro’s bench coach in 2024, and Brown was Bradenton’s hitting coach.

Blake Butler is returning to manage Greensboro, and Jim Horner is returning for another year to manage Bradenton. Jose Mendez will manage the Florida Complex League Pirates, while Jose Mosquera and Joel Fuentes will manage the Dominican Summer League Gold and Black Pirates, respectively.
