Sweet, McMillon, Rangel added to roster amid flurry of moves

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies announced several transactions on Monday that altered the look of the 40-man roster.

None of them included Juan Soto, of course.

First, the Phillies did not make qualifying offers to eligible free agents in right-handers Jeff Hoffman and Spencer Turnbull, which was not a surprise. This year’s qualifying offer is worth a one-year, $21.05 million contract in 2025, which would be too much of a commitment to one reliever, even one as good as Hoffman when the Phillies have at least a couple of bullpen holes to fill. Right-hander Carlos Estévez was not eligible to receive a qualifying offer because he did not spend the entire season with the Phillies. He also is a free agent.

The Phillies have said they would like to bring back Hoffman or Estévez, but it is unlikely they bring back both.

Right-handers Yunior Marte, Luis Ortiz and Freddy Tarnok; left-hander Kolby Allard; and infielder Rodolfo Castro cleared waivers and were outrighted. They have become free agents.

The Phillies followed those subtractions with three additions. They acquired right-hander from Detroit for cash considerations, they claimed right-hander off waivers from Miami, and they selected right-hander to the 40-man roster.

The Phillies now have 37 players on the 40-man.

Sweet, 28, went 9-6 with a 3.91 ERA in 52 appearances (four starts) with Triple-A Toledo in 2024. He struck out 111 and walked 38 in 76 innings. He made seven appearances with Seattle and Oakland in 2023, posting a 10.38 ERA.

McMillon, 26, posted a 1.50 ERA in 10 appearances with Miami. He finished the season on the injured list because of right elbow tightness, following a Sept. 11 appearance in which a couple of fastballs touched the high 80s, after averaging 95.4 mph. McMillon has struck out 21 and walked five in 16 innings overall in 14 career big league appearances.

Rangel, 27, has pitched nine years in the Minor Leagues, joining the Phillies’ system in July. In 11 appearances (six starts) between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Single-A Clearwater, he had a 4.02 ERA in 31 1/3 innings. He struck out 29 and walked eight.
