May 12, 2009
Jayson Werth steals second, third and home in the seventh inning vs. the Dodgers. A fourth stolen base ties the club record. Phillies win, 5-3, at Citizens Bank Park.
May 15, 1989
After 11 scoreless innings, San Francisco scores two in the top of the 12th inning. With two out and two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, Bob Dernier hits a game-winning three-run inside-the-park home run to left field to make it a 3-2 Phillies victory and one of the most exciting finishes in Veterans Stadium history.
May 17, 1979
A 10-inning slugfest classic in Wrigley Field, with the Phillies beating the Cubs, 23-22. Schmidt’s second homer of the game was the game-winner; it came off Bruce Sutter with two out in the top of the 10th. Bob Boone, Randy Lerch and Garry Maddox also homered for the Phillies. The Cubs, who trailed 17-6 at one point, hit six homers, three by Dave Kingman. The game featured 11 pitchers, 50 hits and 15 walks, but only 11 strikeouts. Time of game: 4:03. Attendance: 14,952. Yes, the Wrigley winds were blowing out.
May 19, 1979
The idea of Phillies wearing all-burgundy uniforms on Saturdays starts and ends on this date, a 10-5 loss to Montreal.
May 24, 1999
For the first time in team history, the Phillies have a battery with the same surname, Joel Bennett and Gary Bennett. Phillies win, 5-4, over Montreal at the Vet.
May 30, 1989
Veterans Stadium is empty except for a handful of media who were there for Schmidt’s retirement press conference held at home plate. He had announced his retirement the day before in San Diego and returned home to meet the Philadelphia media. His last game was May 28 at San Francisco.
