Hays to be non-tendered, become a free agent (report)
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies needed a right-handed bat to pound left-handed pitching, so in July they traded Seranthony Domínguez to the Orioles for outfielder Austin Hays.
The deal didn’t work as planned.
MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported on Friday afternoon that the Phillies told Hays he will be non-tendered before Friday’s 8 p.m. ET deadline, which will make him a free agent. Hays strained a left hamstring shortly after he joined the Phillies, then he missed several weeks because of a kidney infection. It sapped him of his speed and strength, and as a result he did not start Game 4 of the NL Division Series against the Mets, despite New York starting left-hander José Quintana.
Hays, 29, batted .256 with two home runs, six RBIs and a .672 OPS in 22 games with the Phillies.
He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the postseason.
The Phillies have not announced their plans for other salary-arbitration eligible players before Friday's deadline. Other eligible players include Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, José Ruiz, Edmundo Sosa, Bryson Stott, Garrett Stubbs and Ranger Suárez.
