Aug. 31: LHP José Alvarado reinstated from the restricted list; RHP Yunior Marte optioned to Triple-A
Alvarado rejoined the Phillies on Friday after leaving the team on Monday because of a “personal matter.” The left-handed reliever threw off the mound in the bullpen prior to Saturday's game against the Braves and was reinstated from the restricted list following the Phillies' 3-0 victory. Marte was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to clear a roster spot.
"Personal situation with my family, that's it," Alvarado said on Saturday afternoon. "I can't tell you anything about what's going on, what happened. It's really, really personal."
Alvarado added that the situation is behind him now and he's happy to be back with the team. He also thanked the team, his teammates and the fans for their support this week.
"A lot, a lot," Alvarado said when asked how much support he's received. "Thank you to the team, thank you to the city, thank you to everybody. I received a lot of messages from a lot of people and fans saying, 'Hopefully everything is good, I'm praying for you and your family.'"
Aug. 31: 3B Alec Bohm (sore left hand) could be available to pinch-hit
Bohm was out of the starting lineup for a second straight game on Saturday night against the Braves after feeling discomfort in his left hand while swinging the bat in the first inning of Thursday’s series opener and leaving in the third inning. X-rays were negative.
Manager Rob Thomson said on Friday that Bohm has "a little inflammation" in the hand, but he said on Saturday that the third baseman is "feeling better." Though Bohm was not used off the bench on Friday, Thomson said prior to Saturday's game that Bohm once again will receive treatment during the game to see if he could possibly pinch-hit. It is unclear if Bohm will be back in the lineup on Sunday, though Thomson said he does not expect this to turn into an injured list situation.

RHP Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
Expected return: Mid-to-late September
The Phillies and Turnbull are running short on time to get him back into the bullpen before the end of the season, but they still think he could contribute at some point. Turnbull is recovering from his injury in Clearwater, Fla. He experienced a setback earlier in August, which has pushed back his timeline.
Turnbull made his return to the rotation on June 26, but he departed after just three innings after feeling a "little grab" on his second-to-last pitch. He was diagnosed with a right lat strain and placed on the 15-day IL the following day. Turnbull was transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 17 to make room for LHP Tyler Gilbert, who was selected from Triple-A that same day. (Last updated: Aug. 29)
RHP Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery; No. 2 on Phillies Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Painter is throwing bullpen sessions in Clearwater, Fla. He experienced general soreness in his right elbow in August, but that's common for pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery. He is not expected to return to game action until the 2025 season. Painter will still be just 21 years old on Opening Day next year. (Last updated: Aug. 29)
RHP Luis F. Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Possibly 2025
Ortiz underwent Tommy John surgery on July 11 and will be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 season and most, if not all, of the '25 campaign.
Ortiz originally went on the IL because of a sprained left ankle he sustained on March 30. He had started to work his way back from that injury before the Phillies recalled him from his first rehab assignment in late April after he started to experience inflammation in his right shoulder.
That had subsided enough for Ortiz to begin another rehab assignment on June 11, but his recovery was once again derailed when he began experiencing forearm discomfort before further testing revealed the need for surgery. Ortiz was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 5. (Last updated: July 11)
