LATEST NEWS

June 28: DH (left groin strain), 1B (left hamstring strain) placed on IL; OF recalled from Triple-A; INF reinstated from IL
Schwarber and Harper were both placed on the IL prior to Friday night's 2-0 win over the Marlins, though manager Rob Thomson said both injuries were "very mild." Thomson was optimistic that both players could return before the All-Star break.

Rojas, meanwhile, rejoins the Phillies after being optioned to Triple-A on June 17. The club wanted the 23-year-old outfielder to work on his hitting with Lehigh Valley, specifically cutting down his swing, using the whole field and being able to bunt. Rojas went 13-for-34 (.382) with an opposite-field homer, two sacrifice bunts, one bunt hit and six stolen bases in eight games with the IronPigs.

Clemens had been on a rehab assignment after experiencing back spasms on June 2. Though he was deemed fully healthy in recent days, Philadelphia wanted him to get reps in left field before his potential return -- but the injuries to Schwarber and Harper obviously altered those plans.

June 27: RHP placed on 15-day IL with right lat strain; RHP recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley
Turnbull’s return to Comerica Park to pitch against his former team -- which drafted and developed him before non-tendering him in November -- ended abruptly after he pitched three innings for the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. He departed with a right lat strain after throwing 36 pitches and allowing one run over three innings, then landed on the injured list a day later. The shoulder problem surfaced on Turnbull's next-to-last pitch of the game before he got Matt Vierling on an infield popup to end the third.

“I just felt a little grab in the back of my tricep, shoulder area,” said Turnbull. “After that curveball, it got a little tight on me. ... I wanted to tell them when I felt it. I didn’t want to do anything to make it worse."

Marte spent time on the injured list in May with right shoulder inflammation and struggled during his rehab assignment, allowing 13 runs (nine earned) on 20 hits and seven walks over 11 innings. He was activated off the IL and optioned to Lehigh Valley on Tuesday before getting recalled after the Turnbull injury.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP Luis F. Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Possibly 2025
Ortiz will undergo Tommy John surgery on July 11, which will sideline him for the rest of the 2024 season and most, if not all, of the '25 campaign.

Ortiz originally went on the IL because of a sprained left ankle he sustained on March 30. He had started to work his way back from that injury before the Phillies recalled him from his first rehab assignment in late April after he started to experience inflammation in his right shoulder. That had subsided enough for Ortiz to begin another rehab assignment on June 11, but his recovery was once again derailed when he began experiencing forearm discomfort before further testing revealed the need for surgery. 1B (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: As soon as July 9
Harper immediately reached for his hamstring as he crossed first base on his game-ending groundout against the Marlins on June 27. He underwent further testing the following morning, which revealed the strain, though manager Rob Thomson called it mild. Harper added that the news was "the best it could be at this point."

Thomson said there's a "good chance" that Harper will return before the All-Star break. (Last updated: June 28)

DH (left groin strain)
Expected return: As soon as July 9
Schwarber felt something "grab" as he planted to make a throw in the eighth inning of the Phillies' June 27 game against the Marlins. He initially thought it was just a cramp, though he was removed between innings after being checked on by the trainer.

Schwarber's strain is "very, very mild," according to manager Rob Thomson, who added there's a "good chance" the slugger returns before the All-Star break. (Last updated: June 28)

C (right knee surgery)
Expected return: Start of second half
After battling through right knee pain on and off for more than a month, Realmuto and the Phillies opted for surgery to fix the issue, which he underwent on June 12. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that Realmuto is expected to miss "about a month."

Realmuto has been playing catch on the field. He took dry swings and hit off a tee prior to the club's June 28 game, and manager Rob Thomson said the catcher is "progressing well."

With the 2024 All-Star Game scheduled for July 16 this season, the All-Star break could give Realmuto a little extra time to possibly return at the start of the second half. (Last updated: June 28)

RHP (right lat strain)
Expected return: Late August
Turnbull made his return to the rotation on June 26, but he departed after just three innings after feeling a "little grab" on his second-to-last pitch. He was diagnosed with a right lat strain and placed on the 15-day IL the following day.

"It's probably going to be six weeks, could be eight weeks," manager Rob Thomson said at the time.

That would put Turnbull in line to return in mid-August, though he'd need a rehab stint to ramp back up at that point. (Last updated: June 27)

RHP Taijuan Walker (right index finger inflammation)
Expected return: Not until after the All-Star break
Walker, who began the season on the injured list with right shoulder soreness, has had difficulty locating his splitter this season -- an issue that manager Rob Thomson said could stem from inflammation and a blister on Walker's right index finger. Walker was placed on the IL on June 23.

The location of the blister makes it difficult for Walker to grip his splitter, but it does not impact his ability to grip the fastball -- so he will continue to throw while on the IL. That said, the length of his IL stint will depend entirely on Walker's ability to regain that splitter grip without any discomfort and throw the pitch effectively.(Last updated: June 26)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right hand arterial vasospasm)
Expected return: TBD
Rucker is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He last pitched for the Phillies on March 1. Rucker was moved to the 60-day injured list on June 3. (Last updated: June 26)

RHP (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: TBD
Covey had started to play catch but he tweaked a hamstring while rehabbing. He is back in Clearwater, Fla., where he is shut down for the time being. Covey has not pitched since his final Grapefruit League appearance on March 1. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 1. (Last updated: June 1)

RHP (Tommy John surgery; No. 1 on Phillies Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Painter underwent Tommy John surgery in late July 2023, and he is not expected to pitch again until the 2025 season. The right-hander remains the No. 19 overall prospect -- and No. 4-ranked pitcher -- in baseball, per MLB Pipeline. Painter will still be just 21 years old on Opening Day next year.
