Phillies' Gold Glove, Silver Slugger winners
Major League Baseball’s parade of award winners starts in early November. Here’s a review of Phillies players who have won Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers.
Gold Glove Award
The award for defensive excellence originated in 1957 by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company. Each manager and up to six coaches on his staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their league and cannot vote for players from their own team.
Rawlings first began highlighting the top three defenders at each position in 2011.
In 2013, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the selection process, as part of its collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The winners are calculated based on a combination of managers/coaches and SABR.
Shortstop Bobby Wine was the Phillies' first winner (1963).
Four times the Phillies have had four winners in a season: 1978 (Garry Maddox, Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Bob Boone), 1979 (Maddox, Schmidt, Boone, Manny Trillo) and 1981 (Maddox, Schmidt, Trillo, Steve Carlton).
