PHILADELPHIA -- As the Phillies aim to improve their roster before Opening Day, they look back at 2019 for help.

MLB.com is looking at five of the best wins from every team and finding out what those wins can tell us about 2020. For the Phillies, it means games that starred Bryce Harper (naturally), Zach Eflin, Andrew McCutchen, Rhys Hoskins and Aaron Nola.

1. Bryce hits a walk-off slam
Aug. 15 vs. Cubs

Harper crushed a 2-2 sinker from Cubs left-hander Derek Holland, deep into the second deck in right field for a dramatic walk-off grand slam, in a 7-5 victory at Citizens Bank Park. It helped the Phillies sweep the series and move within one game of the second National League Wild Card.

What does it tell us about 2020?

If the Phillies surround Harper with better pitching and upgrade the lineup, it is easy to imagine Harper delivering moments like this in October. Harper hit .260 with 35 home runs, 114 RBIs and an .882 OPS in his first season in Philadelphia. Offensively, he tied for 36th among offensive players with a 4.2 WAR, according to Baseball Reference, and tied for 25th with a 4.6 WAR, according to FanGraphs. He did that after a slow start. He posted an .839 OPS before the All-Star break and a .941 OPS after the break.

2. Eflin dominates in Atlanta
Sept. 18 vs. Braves

Eflin allowed one unearned run in seven innings in a 4-1 victory over the Braves at SunTrust Park. It kept the Phillies’ faint postseason hopes alive.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Eflin looked like an NL All-Star candidate early in the season before struggling and moving to the bullpen. But when the Phillies needed him to rejoin the rotation in August, he returned to his sinker-ball roots. He went 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA in his final seven starts. The Phillies probably need to acquire two starters in the offseason, but Eflin had the type of start and finish that could make him a solid middle- to back-of-the-rotation starter with upside.

3. Cutch goes deep with first swing in ‘19

March 28 vs. Braves

McCutchen hit a 2-0 pitch for a leadoff home run on Opening Day in a 10-4 victory over the Braves at Citizens Bank Park.

What does it tell us about 2020?

McCutchen hit .256 with 10 homers, 29 RBIs and an .834 OPS in 59 games before he tore the ACL in his right knee in early June. It was a crushing blow to the Phillies’ offense. McCutchen said he expects to be ready to play by Opening Day 2020. If he is ready and if he returns to form, it would solve their leadoff-hitter issue and provide stability to the outfield.

4. Hoskins’ homer in 11th beats Bucs
July 21 vs. Pirates

Hoskins hit a game-winning solo home run to left field to beat the Pirates, 2-1, in 11 innings at PNC Park.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Phillies fans got frustrated with Hoskins’ second half. He got frustrated, too. He batted .263 with 20 home runs, 59 RBIs and a .931 OPS before the All-Star break, but batted .180 with nine homers, 26 RBIs and a .679 OPS after the break. The Phillies need Hoskins to get himself right in 2020, because when he is, he can hit anywhere from third to fifth and cause damage. Frustrated Phillies fans should remember Pat Burrell’s disappointing 2003 season, when he hit .209 with a .713 OPS. He rebounded to post a combined .877 OPS the next five seasons with the Phillies.

5. Nola reverts to Cy Young form
June 27 vs. Mets

Nola struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings in the Phillies' 6-3 victory over the Mets, settling for a no-decision. He allowed just one hit and one walk.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Nola finished 12-7 with a 3.87 ERA in 34 starts, but went 0-4 with a 5.27 ERA in his final seven starts. If the Phillies are going to make the playoffs next year, they will need more than any outside acquisitions to step up. They will need Nola, who finished third for the NL Cy Young Award in 2018, to pitch like an ace from beginning to end.
