Phillies Nonagenarians

Bobby Shantz heads 16 former Phillies players who are in the club’s Nonagenarians Club. As a refresher, a nonagenarian is a person between 90 and 99.

Major league baseball has had 24 players reach the age of 100. None have been Phillies Alumni and there are no current players of that age. Oldest current player is pitcher Art Schallock, 98 years, 239 days. Shantz is fifth.

Al Monchak is believed to be the oldest Phillies Alumnus. Mr. Monchak was 98 when he died in 2015. His Phillies career was short-lived, 19 games in 1940 as a middle infielder. He coached in the majors for the White Sox, A’s, Pirates and Braves, all with manager Chuck Tanner, 1971-88.

Bobby Shantz, 97

Born: September 26, 1925, Pottstown, PA . . . Left-handed pitcher who ended a 16-year big-league career pitching in relief, 14 games with the 1964 Phillies. 1952 American League MVP (24-7) with the Philadelphia Athletics. Earned eight Gold Gloves . . . Having also played for the Philadelphia and Kansas City A’s, Pirates, Cubs and Colt 45s, he also has the distinction of being the oldest player for those franchises.

Bobby Morgan, 96

Born: June 29, 1926, Oklahoma City, OK . . . Middle infielder. Half of his major league seasons included four with the Phillies, 1954-57. Regular shortstop (1954); played most games at second base (1955). Phillies minor league manager, 1964-66.

Tommy Brown, 95

Born: December 6, 1927, Brooklyn, NY . . . Outfielder who played total of 96 games with Phillies in parts of two seasons, 1951-52. Spent nine seasons in big leagues. Made majors debut at age 16 with 1944 hometown Dodgers.

Bob Oldis, 94

Born: January 5, 1928, Preston, IA . . . Catcher with Phillies, 1962-63; bullpen coach, 1964-66 and scout, 1967. Lone major league home run came with Phillies in 1962. Once hit two homers in one inning in the minors.  Seven total seasons in majors.

SS Mickey Micelotta, 94

Born: October 20, 1928, Corona, NY . . . Shortstop. Played 17 total Phillies games in the majors, 1954-55, his lone time in the show. Hitless in seven at-bats, scored two runs. Served his country during the Korean War, 1951-52.

Bob Ross, 94

Born: November 2, 1928, Fullerton, CA . . . Left-handed pitcher with brief stints in majors with Senators, 1951-52 and 1956 Phillies (3 games, 0-0). Post career, an assistant superintendent of the Anaheim (CA) school district.

Frank Thomas, 93

Born: June 11, 1929, Pittsburgh, PA . . . 16 years in the majors, outfielder, third baseman, first baseman. Acquired in August trade during Phillies 1964 season for 1B. Season ended after 39 games because of a broken thumb.

Don Ferrarese, 93

Born: June 19, 1929, Oakland, CA . . . Lefty who pitched eight years in the majors, including 1961-62 with the Phillies. 1951-52 was spent in the military.

Ray Herbert, 93

Born: December 15, 1929, Detroit, MI . . . Right-hander who concluded 14 years in the majors with the Phillies, 1965-66. He, too, was in the military, part of 1951 season and all of 1952.

Roger Craig, 92

Born: February 17, 1930, Durham, NC . . . Right-hander with 12 years in the big leagues, ending with 1966 Phillies. Managed the Padres and Giants, a total of nine full seasons.

Dick Hall, 92

Born: September 27, 1930, St. Louis, MO . . . 16-season major league right-hander, mostly out of the bullpen. Two Phillies seasons, 1967-68. Five-sport letterman at Swarthmore College.

SS Dick Groat, 92

Born: November 4, 1930, Wilkinsburg, PA . . . Shortstop who played for Phillies, 1966-67 during 14 years in the majors that was interrupted by a tour of military service, 1953-54. All-American baseball and basketball player at Duke University. Never played in the minors. Last game in the majors, Oct. 1, 1967, against the Phillies after being sold to the Giants June 22 of that season.

Joe Morgan, 92

Born: November 19, 1930, Walpole, MA . . . Third baseman on the 1960 Phillies (26 games) during four years in the majors.  Managed in the minors for 16 years and four seasons with the Boston Red Sox.

Ray Semproch, 91

Born: January 7, 1931, Cleveland, OH . . . Right-hander who won 13 games for 1958 Phillies. Also pitched the following season in Philadelphia. Two more seasons in the majors. Spent six seasons in Phillies minor league system before reaching the majors.

Bobby Malkmus, 91

Born: July 4, 1931, Newark, NJ . . . Spent six seasons in the majors, second baseman, shortstop, third baseman. Ended career with Phillies, 1960-61-62. First major league home run was a grand slam off Giants’ Sam Jones at Connie Mack Stadium in 1960. Managed in Phillies minor league system, 1967-68-69.

Bob Skinner, 91

Born: October 3, 1931, La Jolla, CA . . . Final game in 12-year major league career was September 24, 1966, against the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium (pinch-hitter, strikeout vs. Jim Bunning). Replaced Gene Mauch as Phillies manager, June 16, 1968. Replaced August 8, 1969.

Marty Kutyna, 90

Born: November 14, 1932, Philadelphia; North Catholic High School product . . . Right-handed pitcher who played in the majors with the Kansas City A’s, 1959-60 and Washington Senators, 1961-62. On opening day with the Senators in 1962 came up with the first ball thrown by President John F. Kennedy. Marty had his picture taken with President Kennedy. Phillies batting practice pitcher, 1965-78 (Connie Mack Stadium and Veterans Stadium).
