Phillies Stat of the Day: Sept./Oct. 2021
Phillies Stat of the Day: Sept./Oct. 2021
October 3rd, 2021
MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Phillies this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.
Oct. 3: Marlins 5, Phillies 4 -- MV3? Bryce Harper doubled and walked before leaving the game. He finished his season slashing .309/.429/.615 with 42 doubles, 1 triple, 35 home runs, 84 RBIs, 101 runs, 100 walks, 13 stolen bases and a 1.044 OPS. He is only the fourth outfielder in baseball history to have at least 100 runs, 100 walks, 40 doubles and 35 home runs in a season. The others: Babe Ruth (1921, 1923), Stan Musial (1949) and Barry Bonds (1998).
Oct. 2: Marlins 3, Phillies 1 -- Arms race Kyle Dohy made his Major League debut in the eighth inning. He was the Phillies' 34th pitcher this season, which ties the 2019 Phillies for a franchise record. A new record should be set in the season finale when Seranthony Domínguez is expected to make his season debut.
Oct. 1: Phillies 5, Marlins 0 -- Suárez's historic '21 Ranger Suárez finished his season with a 21-inning scoreless streak and a 1.36 ERA in 106 innings. Only five pitchers in the past 100 years, including the Negro Leagues, have pitched 100 or more innings in a season and posted better than a 1.36 ERA. Bob Gibson (1.12 ERA in 1968), Slim Jones (1.24 ERA in 1934) and Red Munger (1.34 ERA in 1944) are the only pitchers in that group to start at least one game.
Sept. 30: Braves 5, Phillies 3 -- Postseason drought continues The loss gave the Braves their fourth consecutive National League East title. It also guaranteed the Phillies will miss the postseason for a 10th consecutive year. It is the longest drought in the National League. It could be the longest in baseball, if the Mariners clinch an American League Wild Card berth.
Sept. 29: Braves 7, Phillies 2 -- Two-strike troubles Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola allowed seven hits. Six of those hits came with two strikes. Nola finished the night with 82 two-strike hits allowed this season, which leads the National League. It is a career high.
Sept. 28: Braves 2, Phillies 1 -- Undisputed ace Phillies ace Zack Wheeler allowed two runs in seven innings. He threw 12 pitches in a clean seventh inning, giving him 439 pitches in the seventh inning or later this season. It is the highest mark in baseball, and 67 more than any other pitcher in baseball this season. Out of a host of National League Cy Young Award candidates, the Dodgers' Walker Buehler is the closest to Wheeler with 269.
Sept. 26: Pirates 6, Phillies 0 -- Everybody starts Hans Crouse was the 17th different pitcher to start a game for the Phillies this season. It is the second-highest mark in franchise history. Only the 1946 Phillies started more, with 19. The 2021 Phillies starters (in alphabetical order): Chase Anderson, Cam Bedrosian, Connor Brogdon, Sam Coonrod, Crouse, Zach Eflin, Kyle Gibson, David Hale, Spencer Howard, Brandon Kintzler, Adonis Medina, Matt Moore, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez, Ranger Suárez, Vince Velasquez and Zack Wheeler.
Sept. 25: Phillies 3, Pirates 0 -- Elite company Bryce Harper's third-inning home run was his 46th extra-base hit since the All-Star break. Harper entered the game with 45 extra-base hits and 61 walks since the break. Since the first All-Star Game in 1933, only six other players had 45 extra-base hits and 60 walks in the second half of a season: Lou Gehrig (1934 and 1936), Harlond Clift (1938), Jimmie Foxx (1938), Hank Greenberg (1938), Barry Bonds (2001) and Ryan Howard (2006).
Sept. 24: Phillies 8, Pirates 6 -- Extra-base machine Bryce Harper's double to right in the fifth inning was his 40th double of the season. It was his 45th extra-base hit since the All-Star break, which is tied for the most in franchise history with Ryan Howard (45 in 2006) and Chase Utley (45 in 2005).
Sept. 23: Phillies 12, Pirates 6 -- Huge rally twice as nice The Phillies became the first team in the modern era to rally from down by six or more runs and win by at least six runs twice in the same season. And they did it over a span of eight days. Last Thursday, the Phillies erased an early 7-0 deficit to defeat the Cubs, 17-8. In this game, they rallied from a 6-0 third-inning deficit. It was the first time in team history that the Phillies have erased six-run deficits twice in an eight-game span.
Sept. 22: Phillies 4, Orioles 3 -- Cutch in the clutch Andrew McCutchen hit his 25th homer of the season, becoming the third Phillies player to reach the mark, along with Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins. It is just the second time since 2010 that the Phillies have had three players with 25 homers in a season. Harper, Hoskins and J.T. Realmuto did it in 2015.
Sept. 21: Phillies 3, Orioles 2 (10 innings) -- Bryce for 2 Bryce Harper dropped a double down the right-field line in the eighth inning. It was his 39th double of the season, which set a career high. He had 38 doubles in 2015, when he won the National League Most Valuable Player Award with the Nationals.
Sept. 20: Orioles 2, Phillies 0 -- Stingy Suárez Ranger Suárez has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his 10 starts this season. He is just the fourth Phillies starter since 1893, when the current mound distance was established, to allow three runs or fewer in each of his first 10 starts of a season, joining Zack Wheeler (10 in 2020), Curt Schilling (11 in 1998) and Tommy Greene (10 in 1993).
Sept. 19: Mets 3, Phillies 2 -- J.T. drives them in J.T. Realmuto drove in his 65th run of the season with a double in the first inning. He has four seasons with at least 65 RBIs since 2017, the most by a catcher during that span.
Sept. 18: Phillies 5, Mets 3 -- Harper's streak Bryce Harper extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the first inning, then doubled home two runs in the seventh. He is hitting .426 (20-for-47) with 13 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs during his current hitting streak.
Sept. 17: Phillies 4, Mets 3 -- Bryce vs. breaking balls Bryce Harper doubled in the fourth inning, hitting a 2-2 slider from Taijuan Walker. Harper entered the game with a .576 expected slugging percentage against breaking balls since the beginning of the 2020 season. It was the second-best mark in baseball (minimum 100 plate appearances), behind only the Giants' Brandon Belt.
Sept. 16: Phillies 17, Cubs 8 -- What a turnaround The Phillies are the first National League team in the Modern Era to trail by seven-plus runs in a game, but end up winning by nine-plus runs. After the Cubs struck first with a seven-run third inning, the Phillies responded with a seven-run fourth to tie it up. Bryce Harper led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and his 33rd home run of the season.
Sept. 15: Phillies 6, Cubs 5 -- Harper's historic feat Bryce Harper, who doubled in the fourth inning on Wednesday night, entered the game slashing .341/.474/.736 in 234 plate appearances following the All-Star break. His slugging percentage and 1.210 OPS lead baseball in the second half. Harper’s 1.210 OPS would be the third highest in franchise history following break (minimum 200 plate appearances) behind Ryan Howard (1.259) in 2006 and Mike Schmidt (1.214) in 1981. Since 2000, there have been only six players with an OPS in the second half as high as Harper’s 1.210 (min. 200 PA): Barry Bonds (4x, 2001-04), Howard (2006), Manny Ramirez (2000), Sammy Sosa (2001), Jim Thome (2002) and Christian Yelich (2018).
Sept. 14: Cubs 6, Phillies 3 -- Leadoff pop Odúbel Herrera's leadoff home run was the 10th of the season for the Phillies, setting a new franchise record. The previous was nine in 2007, all by Jimmy Rollins. Of the 10 leadoff homers, four Phils players have hit at least one: Herrera (3), Andrew McCutchen (3), Jean Segura (3) and Freddy Galvis (1).
Sept. 12: Rockies 5, Phillies 4 -- Nola's K milestone Aaron Nola struck out Ryan McMahon in the fifth inning for his 200th strikeout of the season. He is just the sixth pitcher in team history with three 200-plus strikeout seasons, joining Steve Carlton (seven), Jim Bunning (four), Grover Cleveland Alexander (four), Cliff Lee (three) and Cole Hamels (three). Alexander was the only other pitcher to accomplish the feat before his 29th birthday. Nola, Max Scherzer, Gerrit Cole and Robbie Ray are the only pitchers with 200 strikeouts in each of the last three full seasons (2018-19, '21).
Sept. 11: Phillies 6, Rockies 1 -- Slow roller The exit velocity of Odúbel Herrera’s two-run bunt double in the three-run fourth inning was just 36.4 mph. It was the first two-run bunt double in the Majors since the Brewers' Orlando Arcia poked one down the first-base line against the Pirates on Sept. 14, 2018.
Sept. 10: Rockies 11, Phillies 2 -- Harper hits heaters Bryce Harper hit a 2-1 sinker to center field for a single in the first inning, then knocked a 2-2 four-seamer for an RBI single in the ninth. Harper entered the game having seen 1,615 fastballs (four-seam, two-seam, sinker, cutter) since the beginning of the 2020 season and posted a .727 slugging percentage against them, which was the best mark in the Majors. San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr. was second with a .696 slugging percentage against fastballs.
Sept. 9: Rockies 4, Phillies 3 -- Harper hits his 30th Bryce Harper hit his 30th homer of the season -- a solo shot to left field in the first inning -- making 2021 his fourth 30-homer season ('15, '18-19). He has hit at least 30 homers in each of the last three full seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 season). Entering play on Thursday, the only two players in the Majors with three 30-homer seasons since 2018 other than Harper are Max Muncy and Nelson Cruz.
Sept. 8: Brewers 4, Phillies 3 -- Harper stays hot Bryce Harper hit a first-inning solo home run. It was his third homer in four games and his 29th homer of the season. Harper is batting .333 with 18 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, 34 RBIs and a 1.178 OPS since the All-Star break, earning him some NL MVP consideration on a team trying to make the postseason for the first time since 2011.
Sept. 7: Brewers 10, Phillies 0 -- Strange, but true Before the past two nights of Phillies-Brewers -- a 12-0 Phillies win, followed by a 10-0 Brewers win -- the last time teams traded double-digit shutouts in the same series was right here in this ballpark, according to Elias. The starting pitchers on the winning side were Dave Bush for the Brewers in the first game and Aaron Harang for the Reds in the second game.
April 22, 2006 - Brewers 11, Reds 0
April 23, 2006 - Reds 11, Brewers 0
Sept. 6: Phillies 12, Brewers 0 -- Phils pound 6 The Phillies hit six home runs. It was the third time this season they hit five or more homers in a game, which ties a franchise record. They had three five-homer games in the 2004 and 2006 seasons.
Sept. 5: Phillies 4, Marlins 3 (10 innings) -- Difficult destination The Phillies avoided a sweep, but they haven't won a series in Miami since April 12-14, 2019. They are 3-7 in their last 10 road games against the Marlins.
Sept. 4: Marlins 3, Phillies 2 -- Divisional dud The Phillies had won their last 11 straight games against NL East opponents before coming to Miami. They've now lost two straight.
Sept. 3: Marlins 10, Phillies 3 -- Stumbling in Miami The Phillies are 11-19 at loanDepot park (formerly Marlins Park) since the beginning of the 2018 season. They are 2-3 there this season. They have not won consecutive games in a series in Miami since 2017. The Phils must win the next two games this weekend to break that streak.
Sept. 2: Phillies 7, Nationals 6 --Phillies make comeback history The Phillies' comeback victory over the Nationals was their seventh when trailing them by three or more runs this season. That set a modern-day baseball record, according to STATS. Six teams had six: the 1912 Red Sox (vs. the A's), the 1922 Giants (vs. the Cardinals), the 1930 Pirates (vs. the Cubs), the 1939 A's (vs. the Browns), the 1950 Tigers (vs. the A's) and the 2018 Nationals (vs. the Phillies).
