HOUSTON -- Angels general manager Perry Minasian met with the media this week in Chicago to discuss a variety of topics, including reinforcing the bullpen with youngsters , and

Here are some of the key things Minasian had to say:

Q: The bullpen has gotten younger in recent days. How do you balance risk vs. upside?

A: There's obviously risk with youth. But these are players we really believe in, and we think will benefit from the experience. So the biggest thing for young players in general, not just these guys, is not changing who you are. Get to the Major Leagues, and you got here for a reason. So just stick with what you do and how you've done it. There will be a learning experience along the way, and there will be some ups and downs. But with that being said, we like these arms and we think they're gonna be very productive down the road.

Q: Why did you feel an overhaul of the bullpen was necessary?

A: Just trying to find the right mix, right? Give guys opportunities. Obviously, [Chris] Devenski has pitched really well since he's gotten here, has got some huge outs for us in big moments. [Jacob] Webb’s thrown the ball well since he's gotten here. We’ll continue to be aggressive with changing the mix and take chances. Bullpens, similar to position players, relievers -- they get hot, too. They’ll run off eight, 10, 12 quality appearances in a row. So you’re trying to find ways to improve the club, and it's no secret middle innings have been a struggle for us this year. You guys all watch it every day too, right? So trying to figure out what the right group is, give some opportunities to new people and see what happens.

Q: Silseth, Bachman and Joyce add swing-and-miss but also some wildness. How concerned are you?

A: I’m concerned about everything, at all times. [laughs] Yeah, there’s give and take, right? With power probably comes a little bit less command, unless you’re a Hall of Famer, to a certain extent. So it’s all part of a learning curve, having to deal with different things. But yeah, there is. It's definitely different than we've had, from a look standpoint in the early parts of the season. We'll see how it plays out.

Q: You’ve been aggressive moving up your prospects. Where does that come from?

A: We're trying to put the best team on the field. I've said that since Day 1 when I walked through the door. We'll take some chances and give some guys some opportunities. I've been in different spots where we've given opportunities to different players for different reasons, and they've taken off from it. So as far as being aggressive with what we're working with, and what we have, we're trying to put the best team on the field. That’s the best way I can put it.

Q: What’s it been like seeing  making the most of his opportunity?

A: He's played really well. It's good to see. He's a great, great young man. He's worked really hard. He's done some things in the box a little different, gives himself a better chance at the plate. Worked really hard this offseason and worked really hard this spring. Had a really quality first month in Triple-A. It's carried over, and hopefully it continues.

Q: But is it tough that Moniak’s surge has corresponded with Taylor Ward’s slump? (asked before Ward homered on Tuesday and Wednesday)

A: We’re gonna need everybody. We need Wardo. We need him to be good. It's in there; we've seen it. He’s a really productive player. Again, those of you that are with us on a daily basis, you need a lot of players. Things happen, things change by the day. He’ll get his opportunities just like everybody else. That's why team is important, right? The concept of team, it's not just about one player, two players. You need a really quality, deep group of players. Give yourself a chance day in and day out.
