The Angels have agreed to an extension with general manager Perry Minasian that will keep him with the club through the 2026 season. His previous contract was a four-year deal that was set to expire at the end of this season.

“Over the last four years, Perry and his baseball operations staff have begun to lay the foundation for a bright future of Angels Baseball,” said Angels owner Arte Moreno in a statement. “We have been impressed by the steps Perry has taken to infuse our Major League team with young and exciting talent while also revamping our player development process. We believe this extension will allow him to continue the vision of building sustainable success throughout the Angels Organization and deliver a championship for our fans.”

“I am incredibly thankful to Arte and Carole Moreno for their continued trust and support,” Minasian said. “I would also like to thank [team president] John Carpino for the tremendous working relationship we have developed over the last four years and I look forward to continuing our plans of bringing the Angels back to being a consistent championship contender.”

The move signals a desire for continuity within the organization, as Los Angeles has finished below .500 each year since Minasian took over for Billy Eppler entering the 2021 season, and the team’s current .425 win percentage (entering Thursday) is on pace to be the franchise’s lowest since going 47-68 (.409) in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

Furthermore, the Angels have not made the playoffs since 2014, a streak that is a lock to be continued this season that's tied with the Tigers for the longest active postseason drought in MLB. In Minasian’s tenure, the closest the team came to reaching the playoffs was last season. An 8-1 stretch propelled the team to a 54-49 record entering July 28, leading to the Angels going “all-in” on the 2023 season, not only by taking Shohei Ohtani off the trade market, but also by acquiring fellow impending free agents Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López for prospects. The team finished 73-89 in fourth place in the division.

The silver lining for Minasian, though, is that he’s acquired several players who appear to be part of the franchise’s future. Via the Draft, he’s brought in first baseman Nolan Schanuel (22 years old), shortstop Zach Neto (23) and flame-throwing reliever Ben Joyce (23) -- not to mention 2024 first-rounder Christian Moore (21), who is already thriving in Double-A. He also notably traded outfielder Brandon Marsh to the Phillies in 2022 for catcher Logan O’Hoppe (24), who has blasted 31 homers with a .757 OPS over his first 165 games

And it’s that collection of young talent that likely led Moreno to take a chance on extending Minasian. It remains to be seen whether older players like Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon will stick around Los Angeles, but regardless, Moreno, Minasian and company will have their hands full if they want 2025 to be the year the Angels return to playing meaningful games down the stretch.
