The Padres and free agent catcher Pedro Severino have reached an agreement on a split contract, a source told MLB.com's AJ Cassavell on Monday. It will pay him $1.95 million if he reaches the Major Leagues and includes $550,000 in performance incentives, according to a report by FanSided's Robert Murray. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Severino, 29, appeared in only eight games with the Brewers last year after serving an 80-game suspension for violation of MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with the Orioles, over which he hit .249/.315/.397 in 938 plate appearances.

Although he is rated as a below-average defensive backstop and pitch framer, it appears San Diego is acquiring Severino for depth behind Austin Nola, Luis Campusano and Brett Sullivan.

Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Nationals in 2010, Severino made his MLB debut with Washington in '15, and spent four seasons with the club before Baltimore acquired him off waivers.
