ARLINGTON -- Catcher Pedro Severino was removed in the first inning of Wednesday's game against the Rangers after taking a foul ball off his mask.
Severino was diagnosed with a head contusion, but with no evidence of concussion symptoms at this time.
Rangers No. 2 hitter Delino DeShields grazed a ball that whacked Severino squarely in the top part of the mask where it connects with the helmet. Severino looked shaken, but he remained in the game -- temporarily.
Three batters later, home plate umpire Brian O'Nora, presumably concerned with how Severino was reacting after the direct hit, called for Orioles manager Brandon Hyde and head athletic trainer Brian Ebel to examine the catcher. Soon after, Severino left the game.
Severino was replaced by backup catcher Chance Sisco, who was recalled from Triple-A prior to the start of the Rangers series. Wednesday marked Sisco's season debut.
Severino, who hit three home runs in Tuesday's 12-11 win, entered Wednesday's contest hitting .288 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in 2019.
