Fair warning, Yankees fans: Patrick Mahomes is going to talk trash

October 10th, 2024

What's it like being a sports fan in Kansas City?

Well, part of the experience is having the superstar quarterback of your city's undefeated, defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs leaping for joy as your city's baseball team -- in the postseason for the first time since 2015 -- ties up Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Yankees at Kauffman Stadium.

The Yankees went on to win, 3-2, to take a 2-1 Series lead with Game 4 scheduled set for Thursday night at The K.

During the fifth inning of the Royals' first home postseason game in nine years on Wednesday, Kansas City's Michael Massey delivered an RBI triple to tie the contest. Kauffman Stadium was in a frenzy, including one prominent attendee: Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes was seen celebrating in a suite after the clutch knock, jumping up and down and making his way over to a former teammate of his who was wearing a Yankees jacket. That former teammate is Gehrig Dieter, who is named after Lou Gehrig and is apparently a die-hard fan of the Bronx Bombers.

It was pretty clear that Mahomes was relishing the opportunity to cheer for Kansas City, to the chagrin of his buddy.

Mahomes, a part-owner of the Royals, is no stranger to baseball -- his father, Pat, pitched in the Majors for 11 years and Patrick himself was a great baseball player. Patrick played in the Junior League World Series back in 2010, and he was a star pitcher/outfielder in high school, even throwing a 16-strikeout no-hitter in a playoff game.

While he wasn't on the field delighting the Kansas City faithful with his tremendous athleticism on Wednesday night (he saves that for Sundays), Mahomes was enjoying being one of those fans himself, watching his Royals in the postseason.
