SAN DIEGO -- William Myers wishes he had more steals in 2017. In one trip around the bases Wednesday, the Padres' first baseman did his best to raise his pace.
Myers stole second, third and home in the fourth inning of San Diego's 3-0 victory against the Phillies at Petco Park, becoming the first player to swipe every base in one inning since Dee Gordon for the Dodgers on July 1, 2011.
Myers became the first Padre to accomplish the feat and only the third first baseman since 2000 with three steals in a game. He joins Gordon and Jayson Werth as the only players to steal for the cycle in an inning this century.

Myers also became the first Padre with three steals in a game since Travis Jankowski also stole for the cycle, albeit across separate innings, on Aug. 1, 2016. In setting a single-game career high Wednesday, he leads San Diego with 14 this season. After stealing a career-high 28 a year ago, Myers, in the midst of the season-long slump, wants more.
"I wish I had more steals," Myers said. "I haven't been on base enough lately to take any bags, but it's nice to be able to take three in one inning today."
Myers reached with an RBI single into left off Philadelphia's Nick Pivetta, putting the Padres ahead 1-0. Myers had walked against Pivetta in the first, noticing how slow he was in his first pitch out of the stretch.
On Pivetta's first pitch to Austin Hedges in the fourth, Myers confidently took second, easily stealing the base with a headfirst slide. Once at second, Myers felt Pivetta was paying little attention to him, so as Hedges drew a full-count walk, Myers sprinted for third, giving him his second multi-steal game of the season and first since June 13.

On an 0-1 pitch to Hunter Renfroe, Hedges broke for second. Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp's throw arrived far ahead of Hedges, but the Padres' catcher stopped between bases and got in a rundown. Myers was initially supposed to head home when Rupp threw to second, but he misread the play.
Instead, when second baseman Cesar Hernandez threw to first baseman Tommy Joseph in an attempt to nab Hedges, Myers began his dash to the plate. Joseph threw home, but Myers beat Rupp's tag to complete his trip around the diamond.
"That was kind of a botched play that just ended up working out," Myers said. "I was lucky enough to get two good opportunities to run and then got lucky on the other one."

Hedges stole second on the play, giving the Padres their first four-steal inning since Oct. 2, 1999, when they stole five in the seventh against Arizona.
Myers, meanwhile, became the 51st player in MLB history to steal three bases in the same inning, according to Baseball Almanac. The fastest first baseman in baseball, Myers walked again in the sixth and added a double in the eighth, reaching base four times as he continues to try to find his timing and swing. The 2016 All-Star is batting .207 since May 5.
An all-around performance like Wednesday, where he also threw to third to get the lead runner on a grounder in the fourth, could be what gets Myers going.

"For me, I just want Wil to grind," Padres manager Andy Green said. "Not worry about what happened the day before and let it affect him the next day, whether good or bad. He's so good, he's got so much talent, I just want him to fight every at-bat and not worry about what he's trying to build from a momentum perspective or what he's trying to leave behind."
Wednesday, at least, all Myers left behind him was dust.
