SAN DIEGO -- The Padres announced after their 5-1 win over the D-backs on Sunday that infielder Luis Sardinas was designated for assignment.
The move opens up a spot on the 25-man roster for infielder Chase d'Arnaud, who was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox before the game. d'Arnaud will join the Padres on Tuesday as they begin a three-game series with the Mets.
Right-hander Carter Capps was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for d'Arnaud on the 40-man roster. With Sardinas being designated for assignment, though, the Padres' have a spot open on their 40-man roster.
d'Arnaud, 30, played in just two games with the Red Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Braves on April 27. In 408 career at-bats, d'Arnaud has a slash line of .233/.289/.314 and has appeared in games at shortstop, second base, third base and all three outfield spots.
"He'll get an opportunity to play," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He's bounced around the diamond fairly consistently. He didn't play too much in Boston, but I saw him last year in Atlanta. He's a very good athlete and can field very well and steal some bases. He sprays the ball around the yard, kind of a contact-oriented guy."
The Padres acquired Sardinas from the Mariners in August, and there was hope he might have developed into an everyday shortstop. But he was hitting just .163 without an extra-base hit through 49 at-bats this year.
Sardinas showed flashes of success at the plate last year with the Padres, though, with a slash line of .287/.353/.417, along with two homers and 13 RBIs in 108 at-bats. While he's scuffled at the plate this year, he was able to give the Padres a scoreless inning of relief in Friday's 10-1 loss to Arizona.

Capps hasn't pitched since August 2015 after undergoing Tommy John surgery while with the Marlins. He began the year on the 10-day disabled list and was sent out on a rehab assignment on April 11.
But after throwing two scoreless innings for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, he surrendered 10 runs -- five earned -- in five innings with Triple-A El Paso, and was sent back to the team's complex in Arizona on May 5 to work on his mechanics.
