Rehabbing Maybin starts to play catch

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Outfielder Cameron Maybin, who suffered a ruptured left biceps tendon March 2, is beginning the phase of building up strength in the biceps.

Maybin, who incurred the injury making a diving catch, played catch for the first time Friday after a period of two-plus weeks where he was to rest the tendon.

"He had the rest period and now he's starting to do some things in the weight room to gradually start building up that biceps," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He's doing well. There's no timetable ... but the medical staff is happy with where he's at now."

Shortly after the injury, Maybin had an MRI in San Diego that revealed the ruptured biceps tendon. He and the team opted against the surgery route and instead chose rest and rehabilitation. He was told at that point that he would miss between two and three months.
