Padres Wild Card roster out; no Clevinger
NEW YORK -- The Padres unveiled their Wild Card Series roster on Friday morning, with minimal surprise. It features 14 position players and 12 pitchers, as manager Bob Melvin had previously indicated.
That decision left room for both Luis Campusano and Brandon Dixon on the Padres' bench. Dixon will serve as a pinch-hit bat, and Campusano’s presence gives the Padres some flexibility to maneuver behind the plate, with three catchers on the roster.
Meanwhile, the roster does not feature right-hander Mike Clevinger, who was scratched from his Wednesday start due to illness. Clevinger was cleared to travel to New York on Thursday after a pair of negative COVID tests, Melvin said.
But with Clevinger still feeling slightly under the weather, the Padres opted for the lefty Sean Manaea to fill the primary long relief role in Clevinger’s place. The team is hopeful that Clevinger could start a game in the NL Division Series against the Dodgers if the Padres advance. (Rosters are reset after each round in the postseason.)
“Clev was not feeling great,” Melvin said. “We could’ve gone any number of different directions. But with him flying in late and the whole bit – we’ll see where we go with him – but I just felt like maybe another lefty with a little bit of length down there was important.”
As for the Padres’ bench, the decision to keep Dixon would’ve been a major upset two weeks ago. But he proved enough in his short big league tenure to be called upon in a pinch-hit spot, Melvin said.
Brandon Drury is the team’s primary bench bat in Game 1 (with Wil Myers starting at first and Josh Bell at DH). But Melvin indicated that the righty-hitting Dixon could be called upon in a big spot as well. He went 3-for-14 in five games for the Padres after a late-September callup.
“I’ve seen a nice swing,” Melvin said. “It’s a nice, short stroke. You look at our bench and the obvious guy is Drury today. But Dixon could show up somewhere, too. He’s hitting pretty well. He didn’t get a ton of at-bats, but has the type of stroke that he doesn’t need a lot of at-bats.”
