'Tough as nails' Albies rests to mend wrist
ATLANTA -- In an attempt to prevent Ozzie Albies’ right wrist ailment from becoming more debilitating, the Braves have decided they will occasionally rest the second baseman for a day at a time over the next couple weeks.
Albies was out of the lineup for the second time in three days on Sunday, when the Braves hosted the Mets at Truist Park. He is available to enter the game if necessary, like he did on Friday night as a late-inning defensive replacement.
“I think if we can manage this thing over a period of time, we can get it taken care of if we can just lighten the workload a little bit,” manager Brian Snitker said.
Albies has felt discomfort over the past week, but it does not appear he is dealing with any structural damage. The team’s medical staff has not seen a need to schedule an MRI exam.
“It’s just uncomfortable more than anything,” Snitker said. “I just don’t want it to become more of something. That’s the biggest thing. I think we’re just trying to be proactive, instead of reactive this year."
Adeiny Hechavarría has served as the Braves’ second baseman when Albies has been out of the lineup. Hechavarría does not offer what Albies does from an offensive standpoint, but he remains one of the game’s top defensive infielders.
Still, the wrist has seemingly hindered Albies, who has hit .194 (7-for-36) through this season’s first nine games. He is 2-for-12 over the past three games he has started.
“Albies is tough as nails,” Snitker said. “He doesn’t ever want to come out. It’s not easy to do this. But I think for the long haul, even in a shortened season, it’s best to manage this thing because I don’t think it will take all that long to get him right.”
