O's sign first-rounder Mountcastle

BALTIMORE -- Steve Mountcastle used to travel to Baltimore to watch the Orioles as a young kid. Give it a little time and he may be watching his son play at Camden Yards shortly.

The Orioles announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with their second selection in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Ryan Mountcastle. According to MLB.com's Jim Callis, the two sides agreed to a signing bonus worth $1.3 million, below the slot value of $1,711,900 for the No. 36 pick.

"It's definitely the greatest time of my life so far," Ryan said. "I've just loved the experience here in Baltimore and couldn't have asked for a better time here."

Ryan was a 2015 Perfect Game 1st Team All-American and was committed to Central Florida, but chose to forgo college for "life-changing money" and to get his professional career started earlier. Mountcastle projects as a future third baseman, and he said that he is open to playing wherever the team needs him.

Ryan is the first of the Orioles' Draft picks to agree to terms, and the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder will begin his career with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

"We have been working very hard over the past few days to line everything up," Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich said. "We are elated, naturally, to get Ryan signed and get him going. He was one of our main goals to get going on first. It's important to have him done and everything is behind us now."
