BALTIMORE -- Manny Machado fell short of his third Rawlings Gold Glove Award on Tuesday, as the American League honor at third base went to the Rays' Evan Longoria.
The Orioles' third baseman was one of three finalists along with Longoria and Cleveland's Jose Ramirez for the prestigious award, which honors baseball's top defenders.
After committing seven errors in 114 games at third base in 2016, Machado had 14 at the hot corner in 156 games this season. He registered a .967 fielding percentage in 425 chances in 2017.
Machado was the O's lone Glove Glove Award finalist, as manager Buck Showalter's team dipped defensively this season after being one of the AL's most consistent fielding clubs. Machado won his first Gold Glove and was voted the Platinum Glove winner for the game's best fielder in 2013 and won his second Gold Glove in '15.
He was also a Gold Glove finalist in 2016, along with first baseman Chris Davis, though neither player took home hardware.
The award is voted on by managers and coaches -- though they are not allowed to vote for their own players. A sabermetric component provided by SABR (Society for American baseball Research) also accounts for 25 percent.
